Valerie Harper, who has been battling a rare cancer of the brain for more than two years, was taken Wednesday evening to York General Hospital in York, Maine, after reporting that she was not feeling well. The hospital is a few miles south of where she is appearing in an Ogunquit Playhouse production of the Gershwin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It. Harper was discharged Thursday morning, the hospital said in a statement, which did not provide information about her illness.

The actress set straight reports that she was in a coma.

Valerie Harper is recovering after she was hospitalized for an illness on Wednesday. The veteran actress took to her Facebook page Saturday to clarify that, contrary to reports, she is not in a coma and suggested her hospitalization was caused by medication that "didn't agree" with her:

Valerie Harper’s husband has revealed the end is near for the beloved actress.

In an emotional Facebook post, Tony Cacciotti, Harper's longtime husband, wrote that doctors said his wife, who is battling cancer, should be placed in hospice care. Yet, he is refusing.

“I have been told by doctors to put Val in hospice care and I can't,” he wrote. “As long as the powers above allow us, I will do my very best in making Val as comfortable as possible.”...

Harper, 73, best known for her role as Rhoda Morgenstern on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and its spinoff, "Rhoda," has been battling cancer for years.

I am sad to learn that Valerie may be near the end of her life. I appreciate so much her contributions to the entertainment industry, starting with one of my all time favorite TV shows, Mary Tyler Moore.

However, I must correct the misconception that Valerie’s husband implies that hospice is NOT about keeping his wife as comfortable as possible. In my experience, no one does that BETTER than hospice. They are angels on earth. People who think that hospice means giving up hope are mistaken. Hospice means having hope to live fully and comfortably until you die. Hospice means having hope for healing psychological and emotional wounds before you die. It means having hope for a “good death”, because YES that is possible. It means having hope to not fear death. This is my opinion only, but I have seen it make a huge difference in my family.

May Valerie and her family have all of those things, whether she has hospice care or not. My heart is with her.
