Who Is Sarah Doe?
This unidentified woman is believed to be named ‘Sarah’. An employee from the Queens Avenue United Churched believed Sarah had stopped by their soup kitchen around three weeks prior. They think her first name was Sarah, but did not know her surname.
On August 10, 2000,
Sarah was seen climbing over a guard rail on the Arthur Laing Bridge’s north end. Two passing drivers witnessed her jump off the bridge. She fell for nine meters before hitting the South West Marine Drive off-ramp.
The impact of the fall fractured Sarah’s ribcage, collars bones, the left side of her jaw, and several teeth. Her broken bones punctured her lung and aorta, which caused her lungs to fill up with blood. She did not die on impact, but was pronounced dead at 11:25 A.M. in the Vancouver General Hospital.
Inside of Sarah’s pocket was a page ripped from a phone book listing social service organizations and three scraps of paper with phone numbers written on them. The phone numbers were traced to Abbotsford, Port Coquitlam, and Whistler. One of the phone numbers had the name “Buzz” alongside it. He was a man from Surrey that met Sarah in New Westminster and did not know her name.
Additional shelters believed Sarah might have stayed with them. Somebody who recognized Sarah claimed that she was kicked out of her residence by a former boyfriend. She briefly worked in the sex trade in New Westminster, but did not want to continue that lifestyle. Police do not believe Sarah was on the streets for very long.
No drugs or alcohol was found in her system and there was no evidence of prior drug abuse.
Sarah is buried in an unmarked plot at Vancouver’s Mountain View Cemetery.
