President Trump said (Sat Jan 3) Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were "captured and flown out of the Country" early Saturday morning, confirming a "large scale strike" had been carried out by U.S. forces, as explosions were reported in Caracas and elsewhere.

The U.S. Army's Delta Force, an elite special forces unit, carried out the operation to capture Maduro, officials told CBS News.

It’s about time 😅 Glad he’s arrested. Hopefully now drugs won’t be flooding into the US and other countries.

I can't wait to hear how the operation went down. While the news sounds like a military operation, it also was a law enforcement operation, and he was arrested by proper authorities for the crimes he was indited on in 2020.

Well this is frightening. The implications from this will be far reaching. I’m questioning the legality of any of this…
Another war for oil.

I'm interested in the international precedent this will set.

I imagine Putin won't be visiting his Black Sea cliff-top villa anytime soon.

What crime did his wife commit?

Other countries and entities will gladly flood their products into the US.

Maduro lost the 2024 elections decisevely to Edmondo Gonzalez Urrutia, leader of the opposition who received 67% of the votes.
Yet Maduro remained in power.

Maria Corinna Machado, Venezuelean winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize dedicated her prize to "the suffering people of Venezuela" and to U.S. President Donald Trump "for his decisive support of our cause".

This capture was a long time coming.

Telegraph:

Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, told senators that he expected “no further action in Venezuela now that Mr Maduro is in US custody”.

The Venezuelan leader has been the subject of an arrest warrant, with a $50m (£37m) reward for information leading to his arrest.
His capture follows an extraordinary build-up of US military might in the Caribbean as the Trump administration attempted to pressure the Maduro regime to surrender.

I do believe we will see and normalize regime changes and profit motivated takeovers.

In retrospect, I wonder if her being smuggled out of the country recently may have been at least partly in anticipation of today's event. To ensure her safety if it all went pear-shaped.
