The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has said she “presented” her gold Nobel peace prize medal to Donald Trump after meeting him in the White House, nearly a fortnight after he ordered the abduction of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro.

Machado, who received the award last year for her struggle against Maduro’s “brutal, authoritarian state”, told reporters she had done so “in recognition [of] his unique commitment [to] our freedom”. It was not immediately clear whether Trump had accepted the gift.


Earlier in the day the Nobel organizers posted on X: “A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel peace prize laureate cannot.”

I wonder what the president means when he uses the words "mutual respect?"

If I displayed someone else's award of any kind in my home, it would be out of admiration and pride for the person who won the award. If someone allowed me to display their award, it would not be because of the work I have done. It would be because I'm a gushing fan of the person who won the award, and they either cared enough about my exuberant fandom to give it to me or profited off my exuberant fandom and sold it to me.

"Mutual respect?" Maybe if that were your kids award, and even though it's cringe, your kid deigns to let you put it on the fridge. That is the only time it's about mutual respect.

This is not the president's achievement, and there is no way it was given to him for the work he does.
