A potential cold case murder in Victoria is under investigation after unconfirmed reports a man was killed in Ballarat in 2016.

Victoria Police's Missing Persons Squad is appealing for the public's help to corroborate the anonymous tip-offs.

The unconfirmed reports were received in the past two years and suggest an unidentified male was murdered in the region in early 2016.

The man's body was reportedly disposed of according to the tip-offs.
