Major. Paul A. Avolese, 35, a B-52 radar navigator during Vietnam, was accounted for on September 21, 2020, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Major. Paul A. Avolese, 35, a B-52 radar navigator during Vietnam. On July 7, 1967, Major Avolese took off from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The B-52 with the call sign Kilo Red 2 was on a bombing mission against enemy targets east of Bien Hoa, South Vietnam.

The B-52 collided with another B-52 while changing positions as directed by ground radar. From the two aircraft, seven crew members were rescued; six were not.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that U.S. Air Force Major Paul A. Avolese, 35, killed during the Vietnam War, was accounted for 21 Sep 2020.

On 7 Jul 1967, Avolese was a Radar Navigator assigned to the 2nd Bomb Squadron, 301st Bombardment Group, 4133rd Bombardment Wing (Provisional). That day, he was part of the crew of a B-52D Stratofortress bomber ("Red 01"; tail #56-0627) conducting a combat bombing mission from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, to a target in Vietnam. During a formation lead change over the South China Sea, Avolese’s bomber collided with another B-52 (tail #56-0595), causing both aircraft to fall into the sea. Four of the crew members from his aircraft were rescued, but Avolese was never recovered. He was declared dead on 24 Jul. He is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC; VVM Wall, Panel 23e, Line 25.
