Virus Alerts?

I'm with you WA ... AVG is the best and I only run the free version, not the paid version! Why anyone would BUY Norton or any of the others is beyond me? I dumped IE after the last windows update, kept getting a "hungapp" error and the windows would have to close, beyond frustrating. Foxfire is just so much faster. For those of you who need to remotely log in or transfer files between say your office and home, take a look at Teamviewer, great program and it too is free. I can leave the office and work from home, speed is pretty good too. I agree with Tuffy, the virus was not from this site, you all have a common denominator, but it wasn't WS. Another helpful hint, some virus's/malware are embedded in program software, if the program is running or loaded so is the virus and your AV software may not catch it. You can scan your computer in safe mode to check for them. Good luck guys.

Because we don't know any better. Norton did work though - right? I would know it if I had a virus - correct? Is it like the flu or is it insideous like cancer?

I wouldn't know how to screenshot - sorry. What I do know, is the Cubbies really need your help now! :blowkiss:

(Psst... Don't tell JBean I said this, but that eyeball of hers is really freaking me out. Maybe someone could ask her to switch her Avi back to the Cubs, since I guess they need the support?)

I hope some people come back here to read. I was hoping to get some of my questions answered.

I remembered something else. When I was involved in searching for something, i went to one of the news sites to read a doc. All of a sudden, I heard this clicking - sortof like sos or something. I thought "that was weird", etc. It happened twice recently. The other time may have been when I was reading the new stuff that just released - again linked to one of the media outlets.

Would this relate to google, browser or the media site? What should I do if I ever hear that SOS clicking gathering sound again?

Thank you in advance for any education you can provide. :blowkiss:

Yes I had something that looked like what you say and I knew enough to not use that to scan and "x"'d out. I used my NAV scan system which had already kicked in and at the end it said "1" detected which was corrected - right? Seems okay.
yep

Could it have to do with having two windows open? I have my email minimized while I'm on WS. That way if one comes in I can minimize here and go see my email. Should I not do that?
doesn't make a difference having two windows open. I do it all the time.

Just throwing this out here - one thing I did that was unusual yesterday was I googled some stuff as per instuction on the RG thread regarding clues and revelations that appear on his myspace page. I have heard that google can be troublesome.
After reading about the safe browsing from Google, without going into technical explanations, they use an automated algorithm code to check for malware/spyware, viruses and trojans. They get false positives as well as positive.

Also it flashed on my screen "trying to ? my email" attach? kidnap? invade? I don't know but I saw "email". Not sure what you saw, but you ran SpySweeper which is a pretty good program and gets those nastys out for ya.

Am I okay? I also ran my SpySweeper later and there were about eight removals but that is usual. Some of you really understand the innerworkings of your computers. They are foreign to me - like electricity - I use it but don't really understand it.Yep you are, except for being a cubbie fan. Will excuse ya for that since you are here, lol.

When someone says "browser" I think I know what they mean but to try and change mine is like asking me to get a tooth pulled. I've bought software that I never could load/use properly. Spent three days to get "cookies" so my printer would work - thought cookies came out of the oven. Now the darn printer is broken (I hate sharing!) and I'm printerless again! I can't just go buy any printer is that correct?Your printer probably isn't broken, the software is corrupted. Try uninstalling the software first. Then reinstall it. M$ is well known for having hic-cups that corrupt itself. Another reason to love my mac.

Please advise and thank you.

This is also where I believe I picked up the warning from google. Understand that every site, including this one, have programs that are harmless. They track the links, know as sponsors/advertisers that members go to. This is how they are paid, by the click. There is no way you can get around them because if you decline receiving a cookie tracker, you usually are denied into the website.

Would this relate to google, browser or the media site? What should I do if I ever hear that SOS clicking gathering sound again? The clicking sound was probably your computer hardware doing its normal operations. If it were mine, I would just tuck that info away in my memory cell and watch for any future oddities.

Thank you in advance for any education you can provide.

This specific warning we are talking about is from google. It's simply warning us that there COULD be malicious code on a given (WS) website. It isn't google or WS. Like I said earlier, the commonality is the media sites we went to. And I would bet their security teams are aware of it and have cleaned them as well. These scammers are hard to keep ahead of.

If you have a good trojan/malware/spyware and av and don't click on links you are unsure of, you can avoid getting the nasties. Also a good firewall, other than the M$ crap they included in their OS, you are really good.

I have macs. But even before I switched and was using XP Pro, I had my machines secured tightly and also used my router as another firewall. In over 15 years, I only got one virus and that was due to a floppy disk that was given to me and I didn't bother to scan it. Sheeze, dating myself here -- floppy disks.

over the last few weeks I have had the same thing some of you describe (your computer may be infected! click here to scan) several times, and each time it was on a different website. It happened at a celebrity gossip site (not at all surprising) and a trusted parenting board as well as one other time I can't remember where I was. It seems to be coming up randomly on different sites. I was sure not to click and closed it down, I hit ctrl/alt/delete and end task each time as I was afraid to even hit the X. I have seen some of these things have fake X's to get you to click. Anyway, just letting you know it seems to be a problem all over and not just here. It hasn't happened to me here so far btw.

Thank You, JBean, and everyone for the info about viruses, etc. The reason I was so alarmed, well two reasons, is that I just had a nasty virus removed from my pc. And two, something very similar to this happened to me on another site when (let me choose the right word.....) "controversial" posting was going on. I trust WS, don't misunderstand, and I trust that all the proper safety nets are in place. But I wonder why some of us all saw it in the same setting, between those pages when we were replying or shortly after. I'm not very savvy when it comes to computers, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about......But isn't it odd that several of us all saw the same thing around the same time?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the time you took to answer all of my questions. I really appreciate it. You're the best. :Banane57:

I'm beginning to feel a little exposed myself for some reason. There are peeps that aren't just peeps - ya know? Honestly, I don't want to get paranoid but I have wondered about different possibilites after reading about computer defense research, computer hackers, blue screens and all those type of skills that some people have and may be able to use against you if they don't like what they are hearing. You open your door, innocently step out, and bang bang you're dead.

Am I being overly dramatic?

No, I don't think you are. I not a paranoid person either, but hearing about the pace of computer technology, and how fast it is moving......The pro who cleaned up my pc told me that it is very hard to keep up with.

I just ran my virus scan and it said that I had 8 trojan viruses in my computer!! I just had this fixed about two months ago after the kids fell for one of those fake Windows alerts. It said something about HKEYS? Whatever that is.

Hash Keys. They can be a pain. Run your virus scan in safe mode if you know how. The less applications running in the background, the better.

Computer Associates, has a great resource and free scan page. I used these people for years and never had any issues. I don't need them anymore since I strictly use only Mac products in our home now.

By the way, anyone interested in replacing MacAfee/Norton, use these products. Much better, use less space and more importantly, they do not attached themselves to the registry like Norton does. Easy to install/uninstall but more importantly they are easy to use.

It just hit me. I was clicking to open a personal message when this stuff came on and just seemed to take over. Got all the messages that trojans were now attached to my email etc. It looked real but I backed out of it - with difficulty, as it kept trying to force a download of this program- and right after typing this I plan to do a sweep of my PC. I think this is bogus and the real harm comes if you accept the download.
I happen to be involved in researching a very creepy murder case and this frightens me. Mods if you are reading this please address this- I think someone is attempting hacking into members PCs.

Ok, just did some research on this.

For one, I misread the google warning page. Newadresult dot com IS NOT a part of google, which I thought it was. No excuse other than I didn't have enough caffeine in me this am to clearly understand the page I linked.

Further investigating using IP and DNS verified sites found that the above referenced site is owned by a china based spam dns site - bizcon.

Yesterday and Friday, the only sites I visited prior to posting on WS were the linked sites from media outlets about yesterdays hearing.

However, I was on the thread between pages 10 and 15 without going to any other pages and the window warning appeared after I had composed a reply to a post on page 13 and I hit the submit reply button. This is immediately when the window warning page appeared. I tried to use grab, an apple screenshot capture app, but it wouldn't take the screenshot. I tried again, using my back button to get the page to appear. Nadda, nothing ........
On Thursday, I was also submitting a reply to another thread when the same screen window appeared.

This website newadresults and its owner bizcon are far more sophisticated than I was use to. Or else I have been out of the business longer than I thought.

I still am going to go look to see the level of harm and what they harm is these sites do. Most spam is harmless; just annoying for M$ users.

Add me to the list! Hubby & son have benn working on it 2 hrs. Hubby told me my AIG was in place. Someone needs to look into this as it appears it doesn't matter what forum you click. Kinda afraid to head back!

Well for what it's worth, I am gonna send a message to google about my experiences with safe browser. Attach a copy of my security log portion along with my log of the sites I visited prior to the alert to when it happened.

I don't expect a reply. But they should be notified when false positives are given. Especially since security forums are seeing more and more sophisticated malware being embedded into ads and emails.

I belong to USAA, and today when I visited the site there is a warning that spammers have been impersonating USAA asking members to fill a form about their banking services with the promise upon completion the member will receive $50.00 in their checking account. The copy of the spam form looked very real, but it wasn't. This is happening with greater frequency, sad. So many members who don't realize it's a phishing trick, click a link.

Always, always go to a new browser window and type in the address. Never click on any link embedded in an email or browser window that seems suspicious.

I don't mean to sound preachy, but after being in this type of business and repairs since 92 I hate to see people fall for these types of tricks and scams. It is so unnecessary if proper security measures are followed.

Best method. Save your money and buy a Mac. Anything a M$ can do, my Macs can do better.

Respectfully snipped for space.

Thank you so much for the advice. It's not preachy at all. People like me using pcs, I equate to the girl who knows where to put the gasoline in, start the car, and put air in the tires. That's it, so I appreciate the solid advice. We have a friend who has been in your industry for years, and when he heard about our recent virus problem, he said....."That's why I drive a Mac!" I think I will get a Mac next time.

Well, guess what? I was just at my favorite TV listings website zap2it and that darn windows malware warning popped up!
I hit control-alt-delete, ended my firefox session and I guess I'm ok although my AVG is scanning right now.
That pesky pop up seems to be everywhere.

I think it is just the newest thing to be around. Fact is many of us are here at WS a lot of the time so it seems it is coming from here. but it isn't.

Don't know much about these viruses, but could it be from one of the advertisers' servers?
