Former factory worker Vivian Nicholson, who became famous overnight in 1961 after a huge win on 'the pools' (a football score guessing gamble) where she declared she was going to 'spend spend, spend!', has died, April 11, aged 79. She had been suffering from dementia since 2009.

The Yorkshire, British woman and her husband Keith did indeed spend spend, spend their £152,000 win - equivalent to about £3 million or $4.4 million plus today. Within four years Viv had been declared bankrupt, and husband Keith had been killed after a crash in their expensive new Jaguar car.

Viv was outspoken and had a strong character, living life to the full, and Brits of an older generation always had a place in their hearts for her.

...after Mr Nicholson's death in a car crash in 1965, his wife was landed with a huge tax bill and later declared bankrupt.

Afterwards, she struggled with alcohol and depression.

Mrs Nicholson later moved to Malta but was deported following a fight with a policeman.

She married three more times. One subsequent husband was killed in a car crash and another died from an overdose.

Speaking to the BBC in 2011, she said*she had "no regrets"*about her "spend, spend, spend" philosophy.
