Vomiting Virus

I had the flu in November and feel like I'm now getting it again. Coughing a lot. Maybe it's another strain. I think more than one goes around and now the vomiting virus to worry about. Bleck. I can't keep getting sick because my husband is laid up with a mending hip surgery and has to be served his meals and even help getting his shoes on.

This is interesting, haven't heard it on the news. According to this link we should also avoid eating raw, unwashed fruits and veggies. Just when I thought it was time to return to salad, I've been afraid of salad for a couple of years b/c of "germs" on the leaves. Ca also be found in frozen fruits, and shellfish. I'm sure there are other official sources with more info, I don't know when this one was published. If I figure that out, I'll add it in.

This virus is wicked. It's the worst I've ever felt. Sorry for the tmi, but typically after you vomit you feel a sense of some relief but with norovirus you are knocked on your butt again. Praying this passes soon as I've already been hospitalized for nausea and dehydration from this nasty bug.

My 6 year old daughter had Norovirus a couple of weeks ago. Nasty nasty bug. I don't believe it was this particular strain though. She didn't eat anything for about five days. Her only saving grace seemed to be Powerade which she drank in small sips.

I managed to keep myself, husband, and son well by keeping the toilets and anything with handles/knobs clean with cleaners and by spraying Lysol on them multiple times a day. Of course we made sure to wash our hands liberally as well.

This has been a rough season for illness for many. :(

A family member has this right now and hoping she feels better very fast. Had to take her to the hospital. This is so terrible! I feel awful for anyone who gets it. I am beefing up on my vitamins/herbs as we speak. I don't want this.

Three times. I've caught this stuff three times in less than a year. WTH?

I'm a germaphobe and there does not seem to be anything reported out there that works against the norovirus. It's freaking me out.

Hmmmm. Just reading this thread now and I know my family caught it last February. I sent an email to coworkers for emergency lesson plan help (I'm a teacher) in the rare moments of clarity. In fact, it took me about two hours to send a coherent email to my coworkesr. It spread very very fast from my young daughter to me and my husband and to others we had visited that weekend. I was sick in the car on the way home and all through the next 24+ hours, every 20 minutes. I would say that if someone at home has it and you are caring for them, you will get it too, regardless of handwashing, but you could beat the odds too, I suppose. Very very harsh and wicked illness.

Geeze SuzieQ! Sorry you have to deal with this again! A barf bucket by the place you choose most comfy to sleep is a good thing.

Now, besides tons of handwashing, here is one other thing.
Most people won't apppreciate it or go for it but wearing a face mask in crowded public places does wonders. It may be oogly but better oogly then so dang sick! plus, I never touch public handles or things like gas pump thingys. I'd rather be the "weird germaphobe" then get so sick, especially when my body doesn't fight off viruses so well right now.
Time for flu shots and I'm awaiting permission to get one.
I want a shingles shot too!
Hope you are staying hydrated and feel much better soon!!!
3 times within a year is just aweful.

I'm thinking masks and gloves are the way to go!

Bumping this old thread as I am curious if this is out there again this year. After I posted above, I got it. I had to go to the ER because I couldn't stop (spare you all the details). The ER doc said that just standing in a room with a sick person and breathing in was all it took to get this terrible bug :(. I want to avoid this nasty bug this year and trying to do better. Last year, I lapsed on my vitamins and starting taking them after someone was already sick. This year I am on it way before lol. Is this going around again or still?

I looked around the internet and couldn't find anything. A friend's husband has been down with vomiting for 2 weeks. After 2 trips to Urgent Care for fluids, he was finally admitted to the hospital and seems to be on the mend.

Oh man, I hope not. I was just wondering why I have gotten the "stomach flu" every year since I moved to Oregon and then I was like...ohhhhh, I had kids! Little germ factories, they are!

One of my kids and I just got over something. It was pretty bad and lasted 2-3 days. Strangely enough, my husband and another child remained unscathed. I honestly would have needed to go to the ER for fluids if I hadn't had anti-nausea medication (that I have on hand for migraines). I've never done a colonoscopy prep, but last week I came verrry close to doing it the, um, natural way.

Stay healthy, WS peeps!

Yes, the CDC is saying this is a bad virus; the "Sidney" strain was identified last year, and has come from Sidney, Australia, across the globe...and because it's new, there is little to no immunity to it.

As with most noroviruses, the biggest threat is dehydration. I know I'm always harping on drinking your water and keeping your fluids up...but did you know that dehydration can cause a heart attack? And did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you're already well on your way to dehydration?

Especially when vomiting and having diarrhea, dehydration is a significant concern...so, as usual, water, water, water. If you're having a hard time keeping it down, drink room temperature or slightly warm water (and juice, too). Stay away from caffeine (coffee, tea and sodas) as caffiene is a diuretic (meaning makes you pee = dehydration). Fruits can be eaten, too...the juicier the better (think oranges).

But if you can't keep anything down, and feel as if you're getting dehydrated, go into the ER...they'll give you a bag of fluids in your veins if necessary to keep you stable.

And, also as always, wash your hands...we have so many newfangled things like little antiseptic dispensers that fit in your pocket and/or purse, but good ol' handwashing is probably the single best thing to keep from getting ill.

I am kinda glad I haven't had a lot of energy lately...keeps me inside, and away from folks who are ill. And away from folks who are NOT ill themselves, but are carriers of an illness or contaminated by it somehow.

Sigh.

Hi HC!
I agree with the water. I drink about four bottles a day because I LOVE MY WATER! I took this about a year and a half ago. I was drinking a cup of coffee when it hit. I drank a lot of pedealite and Gatorade, and made it through without having to make a trip to the ER. I have never been able to drink coffee since. Just the thought of it nauseates me, And as HC said, make it room temperature, or it won't stay down.

I threw up coffee and cookies about a week and a half ago. It was just one time, then fever and chills, so I think it was a mild case of the flu. I'm, still not over it. This was just a week and a half after I accidentally OD'd on a pain medicine, and had nausea and vomiting and dizziness for about 4 hours! Worst Christmas Eve ever. I'll never be a bulemic!!!

Man this one is evil! I have had stomach bugs before, no big deal. You vomit one day and crawl into bed and the next day feel bad but better and go on and are fine. Not this particular strain! I too have anti-nausea medication for migraine and it wouldn't stay down. :truce: I had to get it through an IV at the hospital to get it to stop and still did vomit once more. I lost 5 pounds and not water weight.
I am determined to take every precaution. Got my herbs, trying to get enough sleep, eating good. I will win this year lol. I want to be ahead of this nightmare.

Thanks for looking! Your poor friend :(. That is terrible. I can't imagine suffering for 2 weeks  Sounds like it hasn't completely disappeared but maybe it is too early in the season for many cases. I am determine to be more healthy this year.

My oldest granddaughter had this last night. I felt so bad for her. She stayed home today, and still isn't feeling great. My husband says he feels like he is coming down with it. I have bleached everything, twice now...

I originally posted this one year ago, be sure you or your loved ones don't have the H1N1 "swine flu" that is spreading like wildfire, again, this year. People are dying from it, 11 in my state alone. Plus other strains of flu that are truly horrible. Monitor temperatures, as well, as several friends had temps in the 104-105 range, which is dangerous and hospital level bad.
