Crews searching for possible missing plane in Vermont

BENNINGTON, Vt (WTEN) - Vermont State Police are coordinating a search for a plane that is believed to have disappeared into Bald Mountain Sunday.

State Police have not issued an official report, but the search was prompted by the FAA losing contact with a plane as it was flying over the Bennington area at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Bennington fire and police departments are assisting with the search. Crews set up a staging area to coordinate the search at the Mt. Anthony Union Middle School on East Road in Bennington, Sunday evening.

#NEW: The Vermont Search & Rescue Coordinator told me the downed plane was found far out in Bald Mountain. They say it'll take all day for crews to get out to the scene to investigate. They couldn't give info on passengers/victims.

The pilot was the sole occupant in the aircraft when it went down Sunday. Crews are now waiting for the medical examiner to head to the crash site and complete their investigation before they can begin removing the wreckage. The crash site is approximately 1.5 miles up the mountain.
