The widow has filed a wrongful death suit.

Her suit seeks an unspecified amount for damages, including medical bills and expenses, and funeral costs, as well as her "pain and suffering" for the loss of her husband's "society, companionship and consortium."

Piri's attorneys are trying to suppress what they claim were "unconstitutional searches and seizures" of Piri's Vermont home, his phone records, and his history of Google searches. In addition, they want to suppress the evidence from the FBI's license plate reader, which was located on Interstate 91 south, and which led police quickly to Piri.

Windham Superior Court Judge EM gave prosecutors additional time Wednesday to question an expert witness for Dr. Jozsef Piri after prosecutors said the retired FBI agent was a surprise defense witness.

The next hearing is set for May 30.

This case hits close to home. I live in Naples, Dr. Piri was my doctor. Went in for an appointment one day when the receptionist said I had a new provider. She could not discuss why but a week later I found the news story. To think I took myself and my parents to this man for medical care still scares me.

Honestly, he seemed as normal as a doctor could be, which made me feel even worse after the fact. There were no signs. Not even a little bit. Even looking back I cannot pinpoint anything abnormal about him. As far as I knew he was a well liked medical professional in the area and was recommended to me by several of my new neighbors, who I’m sure after the fact, felt guilty for recommending a murderer as a doctor.

His temperament seemed patient. My mother has MS and can be a bit slower with her speech and he never seemed temperamental or impatient with her when she struggled. He always waited for her to be able to finish her own thoughts. It’s all so very strange.

[In a suppression hearing,] former FBI agent testified […] that the Vermont State Police made multiple wrong calculations when they established the timeline that placed the pickup truck of Dr. Jozsef Piri close to the produce truck where the body of murder victim Roberto Fonseca Rivera was found.
