Oh, jeez I know this woman (Carmen) - she owns a local business that I frequent and I was just in there the other day talking to her.

Are you going to continue to frequent that business?

Are you going to continue to frequent that business?

She was selling the business and the last couple times I was in there she was in the process of training the new owner. I hope he has all the paperwork in order!

Couple tied to Highgate murder arrested

Erika Guttilla and Corey Cassani were caught early this morning by police during a traffic stop on Route 7 in South Burlington.

The two suspects had been on the run for a couple days.

We will likely learn more in court about how police believe the two were involved in a man's shooting death.

According to court paperwork, Erika Guttilla, 31, of Highgate, allegedly pulled the trigger and killed her ex-boyfriend, Troy Ford, 35, back in November. She then allegedly hid his body in a garbage bin on her family's back porch.
Her new boyfriend, Corey Cassani, 28, is accused of helping Guttilla dump the body months later in a wooded area off Darlene Drive, where it was found this weekend by passers-by.

Are there children involved? Sounds like one of those permanent custody solutions we have seen before...

[h=1]Homicide leaves neighbors in fear[/h]
HIGHGATE, Vt. - The town of Highgate has local neighbors living in fear after Saturday's gruesome discovery of human remains.

Neighbors describe their feelings these last few days as shocked and scared. Local resident, Jessica Duprey, said she was shaken.
"I've definitely been feeling a bit more paranoid lately, its something that kind of like shakes you to your core almost, especially when it's so close to home," she said.
Some families haven't left their homes in days due to fear. One neighbor said that her two young kids are not allowed to go outside for the next couple of days.

Duprey said this tragedy is preventing kids from being kids.
"My younger brother is six or seven-years-old, he's seven-years-old and he loves going for walks and loves going on his bike and that's something that's definitely going to affect him is that he's not going to be allowed to go too far away where we cant see him," she said.

The police presence has been overwhelming for many neighbors who say its very uncommon for the area.
"Too much action, you don't think you would see this kind of nonsense so close to home," said neighbor, Joshua Stukes.
Another neighbor, Debbie Spears said she knew Erika Guttilla since the age of two.
She said the events that have unfolded are "very, very upsetting."
"Don't do drugs. I think this could have all been prevented years ago if she got the help she needed, I don't think she would have went to the extremes that she did," Spears said.

Vermont couple suspected in Highgate murder appear in court

ST. ALBANS, Vt. - A shackled Erika Guttilla entered a Franklin County courtroom Tuesday. The 31 year-old is accused of killing Troy Ford in November and hiding his body in a trash bin for several months. Guttilla and Ford were dating at the time.

Guttilla exercised her 24-hour right Tuesday and did not enter a plea, which means she will be back in court Wednesday. Guttilla did plead guilty to unrelated charges and is being held without bail.

Court paperwork shows Guttilla told police that Ford was abusive and had been living at her family's home in Highgate. According to the documents, Guttilla said the living situation became 'unbearable' and that she wanted to hurt Ford.

From May 2022
ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) - A Franklin County Judge Friday sentenced a mother and daughter to serve what will amount to at least five years in prison for the murder of a Highgate man in 2017.

It’s been nearly four years to the day since Erika Guttilla and her mother, Carmen, were arrested for the murder of Troy Ford. Guttilla pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in the killing of her boyfriend. Carmen, pleaded guilty to accessory to murder.

During the second day of their sentencing in St. Albans Friday, Guttilla finally shared what happened leading up to the shooting. “I can’t keep living like this in my house,” Gutilla testified. On the night of the murder, she says she and her mother, Carmen, were nearing their breaking point. They say Ford had taken over their Highgate home after trading drugs for a place to stay and terrorized the family.
