CONWAY, Wash. — A two-year-old boy was reported missing at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, from the 21000 block of Mann Road in Conway.

He was last seen playing on a toy car near the Skagit River, according to Chief Chad Clark with the Skagit County Sheriff's Office. The toy car was later located in the river. The Sheriff's Office initiated a search and rescue effort. Land searches, boats, drones and the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island helicopter was called in to assist in the search.

The search is still ongoing and will resume in the morning if necessary, Chief Clark said.

It sounds that he went missing from the home and the call was made. But why didn't whoever saw him playing by the river (I'm guessing alone) do something? This won't have a good outcome I'm afraid.

Missing 2-year-old last seen playing near Skagit River

[...]

The Navy flew to Conway from Whidbey Island with a helicopter equipped with a powerful thermal detection system, but never saw any sign of the boy.

Law enforcement told KIRO 7 they're heartbroken to say the search is now considered a recovery mission.

Deputies say the river is eight feet higher than it was earlier this year and the water is about 44 degrees.

Searchers will return at 9 a.m. Friday.

This is so sad. No two year old needs to be out playing by himself, especially near a river FGS.

Bless his heart. Prayers.

So the area where he lives seems to back up on the river so possible the last sighting was actually his mom, who says she turned her back for a minute and the child was gone. If he was riding an electric car, I wonder if it took off with him. Did he know, at the age of 2, how to operate it? SO sad. Poor little guy.

Oh no. The thought of a child on the banks of the Skagit is hair-raising. I know the area though I can’t place Mann Toad and google maps isn’t finding it for me. But I can picture the water. This is a heart breaker.

ETA Just saw the Q13 video of the stretch of water. This poor family. I do believe this stretch is actually a slough and as such is affected by tides. My husband grew up nearby on another slough. They run very slowly at times and maybe, just maybe, this child went into the water at such a time and was able to catch onto something. There is likely low-hanging brush. Grasping at straws here.

First search boat has arrived to resume looking for 2-yr. old boy who went missing along the Skagit River. His toy car found not far from this spot. At this point, this is considered a recovery effort. Feel horrible for this poor little guy and family. #Q13FOX

I feel so sorry for the mother. Lil ones that age can take off in no time at all. Prayers for her especially. I hope people reserve their negative comments. She probably feels bad enough the way it is. Bless the family during this tragic accident.

Poor little guy hasn't been found as of today. Search resumes tomorrow. It's definitely a recovery mission.

They’re also getting help from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol searching from the sky but the Skagit River’s cold temperature and swift current have been a challenge.

“It’s very challenging for the divers because it’s very swift and the water is high and murky,” said SCSO Chief Chad Clark.
