For anyone who is interested: I filed a public records request for documents related to this case. Some interesting things came back, including:

Photographs of the burnt airline ticket and/or baggage claim receipt
Various reconstructions over the years
Communications regarding rule-outs

Wow, thanks for doing this! 375 pages of information, that's a lot to read through.

10-30-06 - The Bellingham Herald published a follow up article on the original story
from 1987 concerning the skeleton located at G.P. Included in the article were the
composite drawing done in 1987 and the second drawing completed in 2000. As result
of this newspaper article, I received a telephone message from ROBERT ELVIS BROWN
(C4) advising that he may have some information concerning the investigation.
I contacted ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) by phone. He advised that in 1987 he was
employed at Mt Baker Plywood mill. During one of his shifts, his foreman came
through the plant with two other males, who were not employees at the plant. ROBERT
ELVIS BROWN (C4) indicated that he assumed the two were friends of the foreman.
ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) said that he and one of the males talked about some of the
things that they were interested in and what they did when not working. ROBERT
ELVIS BROWN (C4) said that he mentioned to the male that he was a diver and it was
during the conversation that the male said that he and some friends would climb the
towers at G.P. for fun. The male told ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) that one of the
group worked at G.P. and this person would get them access to the plant after
hours. They would then climb the towers throughout the plant and he explained
they had developed a warning system among themselves it they thought they had
seen. He related that one would blow a whistle and the others would then meet
that
been
at a
pre-arrange location to avoid being caught inside the plant. ROBERT ELVIS BROWN
(C4) said that the male told him that the most recent addition to their group was a
guy who had previously lived in New York state and on their last outing, when one
of the group blew the whistle, this subject did not show up at the pre-arranged
meeting location.
ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) related that this conversation with the subject occurred
after the discovery of the skeleton and the information about the investigation in
the media. ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) did not know the subjects name, but indicated
that the foreman at the time was a man with the last name of Larsen.
ROBERT ELVIS BROWN (C4) indicated that he contacted a friend at the police
department in 1987 with this information.
I contacted Mt. Baker Plywood and inquired about employees during the 1987 time
frame. I was told that the only person who would know employees from that time
frame was the Operations and Human Recourse Manager, Tim Shannon and he was off
until November 7th. I left a message on his voice male requesting contact.
A copy of the Bellingham Herald article was submitted to records to be scanned into
this case file.
KIRO TV also came to Bellingham and filmed a story for the evening news about the
investigation. They were also provided with copies of the two drawings and aired
both on the evening news broadcasts.
Investigation to continue.

I think. Page 73 of the public records.

I think. Page 73 of the public records.
And on p. 75 it says "Possible motorcycle located at GP with Canadian plates"
Interesting, don't think this was ever mentioned before.

Bellingham John Doe was the subject of the latest Bedtime Stories video that covers his case. The illustrations in the video are a bit graphic.

Hmm. Here's a picture (with a motorcycle). The missing person report has sightings of him in Fairbanks, Alaska. If you're traveling from Alaska to Washington State, you'd of course usually travel through Bellingham.

I wonder if anyone has sent this in? The original missing person report for him is from way back in the 1990s, and it's currently assigned to Alaska State Troopers, not any law enforcement in Washington State. Curious!

The shirt was draped or wrapped around one ankle, possibly to bind an injury. Police also found a burned remnant of a Continental Airlines ticket or baggage claim, but could not make out the numbers to trace the ticket.
    • DNA: The chimney heat destroyed DNA.

This particular type of misadventure really didn't become very popular within the US until about fifteen years later. Maybe he was just ahead of his time.
Man falls 40 feet down chimney while practicing Parkour
Urban exploration - Wikipedia
Now this is a good point. . in 1987 "Parkour" was not a thing, but people were still doing stupid stuff like this all the time. People tend to want to tempt fate, often with bad results. Who knows? The guy may have stepped out to get a better look down the chimney. . .maybe he had a few drinks, maybe he was high, maybe he was just "Being brave."

We will never know, but it seems lots more logical to me that he fell in of his own accord, no one dumped the body in, or forced him up stairs, ladders and other obsticles, just to dump a body into a boiler exhaust stack.
