I wasn't aware that her purse was still missing.
Could she have been mugged on the path? Maybe she left the car, sent her texts either while in her car or as she left it. Started walking through the park area and a purse snatching went crazy.
How far away was the culvert? I don't have time to retrace to find that information.

Could she have been mugged, a simple robbery gone bad and dumped in the culvert?

"A search for the 53-year-old woman ended Sunday when her body was found in a culvert about one and a half miles from the lot."

Your last comment about Cheryl forgetting her badge which may have created an opportunity for some creep to take advantage of the situation...

This reminds me of a person that I knew.
He wore a hat, and the wind blew his hat across the street. He went to retrieve his hat and was hit by a car and died.
The unfortunate circumstance of wearing that straw hat on a windy day. I don't recall if he was walking on the sidewalk or just got out of his car.

Maybe Cheryl was unfortunate to have left her badge at home on the wrong day, time, and place...
It's sad!
IMOO.

i think she realized once on the path that she forgot her badge. the police did say she was on that path at some point that morning. once she texted she forgot her badge, thats when the creep jumped her, seeing that she was distracted. ugh. thats why police said to walk with a purpose and not be distracted. omg. :/ i just now put all that together.

"Chief of Police Greg Wilson reminds the community of the following safety tips:

Look: Look around and keep your head up. Do you see someone or something strange or out of place? If so, please call 911 and report it. Select parking spaces in well-lighted areas if possible and avoid parking in remote areas if you can.

Listen: Don’t walk around with headphones on. Pay attention to your surroundings and what you hear.

Sense: If something just doesn’t seem right, it may not be. Trust your, “gut feeling” and take steps to remain safe.

Act: Walk with confidence and with purpose; carry your keys and use the alarm/panic button to attract attention; be direct when confronting unwanted advances; and let family and friends know your whereabouts and/or if you will be late.

Mountlake Terrace police will continue proactive patrols in and around the transit center and encourage the public to report any suspicious activity. "

Thank you Treelights.
I actually have read all threads but I am not retaining it all!!

I'm starting to believe that I'm not retaining any of it, if that makes you feel a bit better!

And in today's day and age, these rules should always apply, where ever you are, whether something bad has occurred or not.

Being proactive around the transit center with patrolling can possibly calm the nerves of people that are uneasy about being there in the first place.

IMOO.

huh? in the press conference with the family and police, police said she was on the path. has there been another conference?

true, but i think that combined with the fact that police say she was on that path and not heard from or seen since, and they searched that area seems to think they thought that is where she went missing.

I will have to go back to one of the threads where I brought up both of these points.

I don't have much of substance to add, but I do want to thank the Websleuths community for providing a place where I can easily access information, links, maps, etc regarding this case. I'm a MLT resident (I live less than two miles from "the culvert") and have found this to be the best resource for staying up-to-date on this unsettling case.

I saw someone post pages ago something along the lines of this isn't just a crime against Cheryl and her loved ones (though obviously it is by far the worst for them), it is a crime against the entire community. Even thought MLT is a part of the large Seattle Metropolitan area; it is still a quiet, small community. Yes, petty crimes occur here (and are increasing as the city continues to grow), but unfortunately, that's just to be expected when the city lies along I-5, Highway 99, etc; when there's a lot of people in the area there's going to be some bad apples. But something this extreme, it is truly out of the ordinary and extremely unsettling. I have never before felt unsafe in my neighborhood and absolutely HATE that feeling of unease. Hoping for some official answers SOON (especially with all the social media gossip going on).

Ok, well no one would carry her that far...
I may be mistaken but I thought I read thatshe could use the path as a short cut to her house which was very close by

The "path" through the park leads to the park & ride lot where she was supposed to meet up with the carpool friend. It does not lead to her house.

Thanks, I am soo confused. So she parked and then went through the path or possibly started through the path to meet up with carpool. So its possible that was when she realized that she did not have her badge. Texts were sent to her friends.... Then where did she go? Back through the path to her car or was planning to?

Cheryl was a smart woman, maybe the self inflicted cuts were her way of leaving DNA behind.

Do we have any verification that the DeBoer home surveillance captured Cheryl leaving home?

Thank you for the photos of the trail. I wouldn't walk it under any circumstance. How does a community support and encourage a pedestrian trail from a transit area that has people living in it's woods? Am I crazy?

In regards to the trail. I'm a MLT resident and never even knew that trail was there until this case. So, I'm not sure if community support and encouragement is necessarily true. That being said, I am only an occasional user of the MLT P&R, not a daily commuter, so maybe that trail is just something more well-known to the daily commuting crowd.

"Police believe Cheryl may have walked through a wooded pathway, which leads to the transit center. "

The usage of the word MAY suggests she may have. It doesn't say she did.

I questioned both of these in thread one.

I believe we have a similar scenario here as in the Whitney Heichel murder. Unbeknownst to her, Whitney had a neighbor/church acquaintance who was obsessed with her. One morning, she was about to drive to work he approached and asked her for a ride. She invited him into her car where he pulled a gun out and forced her to drive to a remote location, where he raped and killed her. He dumped her there, drove her car around for some time, scattering her belongings into trash cans and bushes. Then he left the car at some parking lot.

Maybe Cheryl also gave someone she knew a ride. When she was parking and texting he could have walked up to her car - "Oh hi Cheryl, good parking spot you found here!" - "Yea but I gotta let it go, I forgot something at home, gotta go back." - "Oh would you mind giving me a ride, I'm a bit in a hurry this morning." - "Sure! Hop in!" Then he pulled a gun, powered the phone down, committed the crime in a remote spot, dumped her body (or moved it to his own car and dumped it at night), and drove her car back to where he found her in the morning. I think this all can be done in less than 2 hours.

Something like this has been my theory for some time now, it feels most likely to me.

she left her house, drove towards the bus depot to meet her carpool friends (she drove to the carpool meeting location at the bus depot to ride with them, i believe she typically rides the bus home?). her car was caught on video around 7:00 maybe like 30-45 seconds away from the residential area she parked at. she parked on a residential street right next to a park. at the park, there is a wooded path that leads beyond the park and through the woods and out the other side is the bus depot parking lot. around two minutes after she was seen on video, was when she sent the text about her badge. that is why i believe she was abducted on the path. i suck at simplifying things sometimes, hope this helps.

in the video at 12:40 the police officer said she walked down that path. not sure why he said it was gravel, though, when it is dirt?

please see video. in the video at 12:40 the police officer said she walked down that path. not sure why he said it was gravel, though, when it is dirt? he also said usually around 7 is when the park and ride parking lot fills up. the family also mentions when the park and ride is full, she is known to park there and walk down that path.
