The culvert is flat with a rectangular opening, not round like many are. It doesn't look tall enough to stand up in. Sitting anywhere would put you in water or at least dampness. It's not pleasant in any sense. There would be the constant sound of cars passing over. Difficult to imagine spending any time there.
Yes seems like a bizarre place to go intentionally. And if someone wanted to hide or be alone there are plenty of wooded areas nearby.
Apologies if this has been stated, does anyone know if she had her laptop with her?
I mentioned this before, but the only thing that makes the area where she was found stand out to me is the granite (?) town sign which looks very similar to (imo) a headstone on the side of the road she was just off of.

I'm not sure I agree that she was not meant to be found. I think the perp probably wanted to delay her being found, and get her away from the crime scene (possibly).
The culvert wasn't far off of the road or anything. And I think they knew there would be a search.
I really hope we get more information soon.
ETA - Great post, Pseudonymph!
Does anyone know if that culvert was searched early on in the investigation >? Just wondering if the killer dumped the body days after the crime ?
Han,Welcome Stryker57. You are able to post according to the regular guidelines, basically information or conjecture based on mainstream media.
I have two family members who do not go along with my suicide theory, but both think an extra marital affair gone wrong. Could we agree that this would be considered sensitive information?
Stryker57,"Welcome, stryker.Thank you for joining the forum. On behalf of all of the WS staff, I extend my condolences.Websleuths has a policy by which family and friends have to be verified as "insiders" in order to post first hand information. Considering her carpool was waiting for her, I respectfully suggest this is unlikely.Based on the fact that CD didn't go to work and never met the carpool perhaps she planned to meet someone briefly before work.
Han,
I appreciate you reaching out. However I don't find much interest in expressing my opinion on what the media has addressed. You guys and gals have done plenty of that.

How about this theory ??
Cheryl drove to P & R, parked, realized she left her badge, texted her friend. In the process of searching under the seats or between the seats, she sliced her fingers open on something sharp, like a wire or a piece of glass.
She stands back up next to the car and is looking at the tips of her fingers dripping blood. Somebody she knew saw her predicament, and told her they either had some band-aids in their car or a rag.
She explained she was running late and she needed to get back home and get her badge. Her "acquaintance" suggested she hop in the car, patch up her fingers, and he'd run her back over to her house so she didn't lose her parking spot......explaining further that by the time she went home and back, there might not be any close parking spots left at all. Since she was familiar with this person, she agreed.
Once she was in the car, all hell broke loose. Her cell phone was powered down by the perp, because he knows they can be tracked by pinging. She was held somewhere for awhile....maybe a day....maybe two or three. She was then killed and dumped next to the culvert sometime during the next 6 days.
We're speculators speculating on logical and illogocial scenarios, attempting to make sense of something that makes no sense l, to otherwise competent, rational human beings.I've read a lot of comments about reaching under the seat to look for the badge. This seem to stem from an attempt to explain blood on passenger seat, or to explain getting out of the car to look for the badge under the seat. Does any of that ring true? That is, if her badge was at home where she would normally leave it, is there any reason to be looking under car seats for it?

Every scenario I come up with seems to have at least one unlikely element.

Robbery, also, would be better done under cover of darkness.
I am leaning toward it being someone who knew her. .../snip
