D.C. father charged in son’s death after boy found naked in ‘unsanitary’ home (OCT '24)

D.C. police said they arrested and charged a man after his naked 5-year-old son was found dead inside a trash-laden Northwest apartment over the weekend.

Metropolitan Police said that Deandre Pettus, 32, was charged with child cruelty in connection to his son’s death around 10:20 a.m. Sunday on the 4500 block of Connecticut Avenue Northwest.

Court documents said the boy’s cause of death remains undetermined.

In May 2023, Pettus was charged with assault after a woman told police he hit her in the face and threatened her with a gun, according to court documents. D.C. Child and Family Services took Pettus’ son and two daughters away, but nine months later the charges were dropped for reasons unknown. Pettus soon got the children back, and Child and Family Services began supervising the family.
Pettus has been ordered to stay away from his children. He also has been ordered to stay away from the woman he allegedly assaulted until June.

Mr. Pettus came to her to say he “f——- up” and the boy wasn’t breathing, the witness told authorities.

“I was going to his body and he tried to run and hit a wall,” Mr. Pettus allegedly said, according to charging documents. “I f——- up; he is unconscious.”

The witness explained to authorities that “going to the body” meant throwing hard punches.

He had earlier felony DV charges that were dropped. The federal USAO in DC is weak on crime and particularly poor re: DV. That a GPS monitor was not even requested by USAO despite prompting by the judge is nuts, the 2 girls must be so scared.

CPS in DC was under federal court oversight until just a few years ago. When Pettus was released from jail for the 2023 DV charge he was reunified with his son and daughters. So many failed to protect this poor boy from a known to be violent man. MOOO.
