PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. - An intensive search is underway for a missing 19-year-old active-duty soldier who was last seen Wednesday inside Fort Worden State Park near Port Townsend, police said.

The missing soldier, identified as Devin Mitchell Schmidt, 19, is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and has ties to the Port Townsend area, said Sgt. Troy Surber of the Port Townsend police.

Schmidt's personal effects were located in a wooded area of Fort Worden near the bunkers at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, and he failed to report for duty at 6 a.m. Thursday.

When last seen he was wearing a red T-shirt.

A search was launched at about 8 a.m. Thursday involving the Port Townsend Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, East Jefferson Fire and Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington State Parks, Jefferson County Search and Rescue and Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management.

Navy and State Patrol aircraft crews also have joined the search, along with marine craft from the Coast Guard and other agencies.

More information was posted on the Sheriff Office's Facebook: "Information was ultimately developed that Devin Schmidt was in fact evading detection in the hope of faking his death. Devin was located in Port Townsend at a location he had pre-determined with a co-conspirator and longtime friend, Ryan Bell. Bell, a 20 year old male is a resident of Bonney lake. Bell was arrested and booked at the Jefferson County Jail. Devin is currently AWOL from the Army and was released to military officials."
