[h=3]Details of Disappearance[/h] Manson was a student at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington in 1974. She has never been heard from again. She was not reported as a missing person for six days, as she often hitchhiked to nearby locales and could disappear for several days at a time without notice. Friends initially believed Manson had decided to travel without sharing her plans beforehand.

Serial killer Ted Bundy confessed to Manson's murder before his 1989 execution. A photo of Bundy is posted with this case summary. He claimed that her partial skeleton had been recovered by authorities on March 3, 1975 at Taylor Mountain, Washington, but had not been identified. Bundy's statement has never been confirmed.

Two fishermen discovered a human skull while walking near Highway 7 southwest of Eatonville, Washington on August 29, 1978. The area is near the foothills of Mount Rainer. Searchers also located additional bones, hair and clothing near the scene. A multi-colored shirt was among the discoveries; it was similar in style to the shirt Manson wore on the day of her 1974 disappearance.

Authorities apparently believed the Eatonville skeleton was placed at the scene after 1974. Pierce County, Washington officials did not compare Manson's records to those of the unidentified victim, although a King County, Washington investigator inquired about the possibility during the late 1970s. X-rays and additional records for the victim disappeared from Pierce County sometime afterwards. It is unclear what happened to the documents.

A forensic dentist employed by law enforcement officials ruled out seven missing persons as potential matches for the Eatonville remains in 1978. Manson remained the only possible match with the victim, although the skeleton was destroyed afterwards. Two sets of Pierce County's unidentified remains were taken to a landfill in Tacoma, Washington and another skeleton was misplaced at an undetermined location during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The accidents occurred during routine purges of the sheriff's office property room.

Manson's case was revived for a short time in the 1990s after the details about the lost remains and documents were revealed. No additional evidence regarding her case was uncovered.

Authorities believe that Manson was a victim of Bundy, along with Nancy Baird, Ann Marie Burr, Lynette Culver, Julie Cunningham, Susan Curtis, Georgeann Hawkins, Vicki Hollar, Rita Jolly, Debra Kent, Denise Oliverson, Nancy Wilcox, and other girls and young women. They remain listed as missing persons and have never been recovered.

The one problem with that is the crudely made cross... if she was a Bundy victim then i doubt he'd take the time to fashion a cross to mark her grave. But stranger things have happened I suppose.
What if the cross isn’t even related to the case. Manson has DNA available and so does the Jane doe but she isn’t on the rule out list.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Manson was a student at the Evergreen State College in Olympia in 1974. On March 12, 1974, Manson was last seen at 7:00 p.m. by a college roommate whom Manson told she was going to attend a jazz concert being held on the campus. She was reportedly last seen between the dorms and library on the way to the concert. Manson did not indicate she planned to leave campus and supposedly all of her personal belongings were still in her room.

Theodore Robert "Ted" Bundy confessed on death row to abducting Manson from the Olympia campus. However, Bundy never specifically said where Manson's remains might be found. First, he said Manson was in the mountains, then in the Cascades, then finally he said she was on Taylor Mountain, but he never got more specific than that. Bundy also claimed he took Manson's skull to his girlfriend's house and burned it in the fireplace "down to the last ash" in "a fit of... paranoia and cleanliness".

There had been signs of Bundy around the campus, including his yellow Volkswagen. Manson had also talked about meeting "an individual she had just met who had a cast on his arm, who may or may not have been named Ted." Bundy lured some of his victims to their deaths by pretending to need help because he had a broken arm.

On August 29, 1979, two fishermen came upon a human skull while walking in the foothills of Mount Rainier, southwest of Eatonville. Searchers combed the area and located more human bones, hair, and a multicolored shirt, which became a key piece of evidence since Manson was said to be wearing a similar shirt when she was last seen.

However, confirming the identity of Manson might prove impossible because the Pierce County Sheriff's Department lost the remains a few years after their discovery, along with X-rays and other forensic data.

The site near Eatonville could be considered in the Cascade foothills. Authorities checked with local jurisdictions, looking for a missing person who would fit the evidence. Dental X-rays were made and compared to some missing person reports, but they were never compared to Manson's dental charts.

An investigation was revived after a December 2, 1996 story in The News Tribune about three unidentified skeletons that disappeared from the property room at the sheriff's department. Two of the skeletons were destroyed in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the Tacoma landfill during routine purges of the property room at the sheriff's department. Neither the Pierce County Sheriff's Department nor the Medical Examiner's Office can say what happened to the third skeleton found near Eatonville. Officials also havent been able to explain why records related to the skeleton are missing.

A check of the dental records of the missing persons in the state produced eight possible identities for the Eatonville skeleton. A forensic dentist hired by the sheriff's department ruled out all but Manson's case.

Despite Bundy's confession, Manson's remains have yet to be located.

Another case of mishandling the evidence:

"In 1978, the partial remains of a young woman were discovered in Eatonville, Washington, near Mount Rainier. A multi-colored shirt was found among the remains; Donna was wearing a shirt similar to the one found on the day that she disappeared. Seven missing persons were ruled out as possible matches to the remains, and Donna was considered a strong possible match. However, the case and the remains were both grossly mishandled––the remains were destroyed after being examined by a forensic dentist (and determined to be a strong possible match to Donna) and the x-rays and additional documents pertaining to the case were lost during a 'routine purge' of the county sheriff's office."

I wonder if there is any chance of closure. We know Ted Bundy killed her. But we dont hace her remains.
