The search for two snowboarders in the Mt. Baker Ski Area has been suspended until the weather improves. The young men were supposed to return home to Bellingham Sunday night but never did; their vehicle was found in the resort’s upper parking lot. Drew Lenz, 20. and Jacob Amancio, 22, were backcountry snowboarding Sunday, beyond the boundary lines of Baker, which doesn’t open until Thursday. That is also when the weather is expected to clear.

The two snowboarders skirted the edge of the Baker boundary, likely reaching an elevation of about 5,000 feet. That is where rescuers have been concentrating their efforts. Amancio’s mother said the pair were carrying avalanche beacons and equipment.

Jake Amancio, 22, and his friend, Drew Lenz, 20, went snowboarding on Sunday in the backcountry near Heather Meadows. The men, who live in Bellingham with other friends, were expected home by early evening, and when they didn't return their roommate called 911.

On Monday morning, Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies found the truck the men drove to the ski area parked in the upper lot and began a search with volunteers.

Ski workers did a transceiver search on Monday to listen for emergency beacons, but did not find any sign of the men. Ski workers, preparing for opening day on Thursday, are now keeping an eye out for any signs of the missing snowboarders.

Search suspended:

Authorities say hazardous conditions have caused them to suspend a search for two missing Bellingham snowboarders in the Mount Baker wilderness.

The Bellingham Herald reports Jake Amancio and Drew Lenz of Bellingham, both in their 20s, were reported overdue by a roommate Sunday night when they didn't return from a planned day of backcountry snowboarding in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

"Back country snowboarding"... they could be anywhere.

The search again has been suspended due to bad weather. The family of the two snowboarders is still continuing to do their own search.

The weather is supposed to remain the same for much of the week. If the Whatcom County Search and Rescue do get a break in the weather, they will try to return to search.

Another snowboarder went missing on 1/21/18.

In addition, the article updates Drew and Jake's missing status:

Drew Lenz and Jake Amancio of Bellingham vanished Nov. 12 in the Mount Baker wilderness outside ski area boundaries.

After a weeklong backcountry search, they are presumed dead.
