WA - Gary Smith, 68, dies of drug overdose, Port Orchard, 5 March 2014

57-year-old Department of Corrections (DoC) worker Heidi Lorraine Smith has been arrested for the first degree murder of her husband Gary Smith, who died in Port Orchard, Washington of an overdose of medication in March 2014.

She also faces charges of attempting to solicit DoC inmates to kill her husband. Her 68-year-old husband had serious health problems but his daughter asked police to open an investigation after he died.

Kitsap County detectives uncovered a report made to the Port Orchard Police Department in 2008 that alleged Smith, an employee at the Department of Corrections work/release program, said her husband was “worth more dead than alive,” and that she expressed interest in his $1 million life insurance policy.

Police say she admitted to them she would 'probably be going to jail for murder'.
