WA WA - Jonathan Hoang, 21, High-functioning Autism, left home w/o jacket, shoes or phone, 114th Dr NE, seen on Burn Rd, Arlington, 30 Mar 2025

  • #21

Dozens of neighbors held a demonstration urging the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office to further help find a missing Arlington man with autism.

People lined the streets at the corner of Smokey Point Boulevard and Highway 531 in Arlington Saturday afternoon.

Pfister said her family spoke with the sheriff’s office earlier this week and tried to provide detectives with more details that their private investigator had gathered.

“Major Crimes has taken over the case as of I think eight days ago, and we’re struggling to get them to cooperate with our PI. We presented them with hours of video footage what our PI has assured us as leads,” she added.

I don't see any new info in this post, but SCSO confirms that Jonathan is still missing:

The most recent post on the family-run FB "Help Us Find" page has all current info consolidated in one spot (and confirms that the page is being managed by family):

National autism advocates are raising alarms over the response by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office to the disappearance of a vulnerable 21-year-old man from Arlington.

Jonathan Hoang, who has autism, has been missing for more than three weeks. His family and advocates told KING 5 they believe critical time was lost in the early days of the search.

(Police waited 5 days to put out an Endangered Missing Alert.)

In a series of email chains obtained by KING 5, a Snohomish County sergeant named Det. William Westsik told the Washington State Patrol’s Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit on Thursday., Apr. 3., that Jonathan “is not being considered an endangered missing person,” adding that he “is able to effectively navigate public transit.”

Jonathan’s father disputes that characterization.

“That is absolutely false,” Hoang said. “He never went on public transport by himself, and we live three miles away from the closest bus stop.”

April 29 2025

  • The family of Jonathan Hoang is still fighting to find him on the 30th day of his disappearance.
  • The family met with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office to talk over concerns, but are still worried about long-term data preservation.

Loved ones created an online petition April 26th to call for the sheriff's office to elevate the case from a missing person case to a criminal case and to form an Interagency task force.

The petition reads;

"Jonathan's disappearance must be treated as what it is: a crime. Every minute counts, and the mishandling of his case only increases the danger he faces. We, the undersigned, demand immediate changes:

  1. SCSO must treat Jonathan Hoang’s disappearance as a criminal investigation and possible kidnapping
  2. We call for the immediate formation of an interagency task force—including the Washington State Patrol and FBI—to bring all available resources to bear. If SCSO cannot or will not do this, they must step aside and allow agencies with the capacity to act swiftly and thoroughly to take over jurisdiction

Nearly two months after a 21-year-old Arlington man went missing, his family is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his location.

Jonathan Hoang, 21, has Autism, and his father says he has the mental state of an 8 or 9-year-old boy.

*****
His family has posted the reward through Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound for anonymous tips that could lead to his whereabouts.

*****
As of late April, the sheriff’s office said it has not received any new tips or leads.

*****
They (the family) have also hired a private investigator and an attorney to help with the case, and last week sent a subpoena to Apple and Verizon to obtain information from Hoang's iPad that he took with him. They're still awaiting the response.

Now I am confused. He has been quite consequently described as high functioning autistic man, but the mentality of nine years old points towards quite severe intellectual disability, which excludes the "high functioning" label. So which one it is?

From what I've seen, the family has described him as mentally 8-9 years old but the press and LE have described him as a high functioning autistic man. There seems to be a lack of agreement among the involved parties as to this.

Another example of family disagreeing with what LE has said about Jonathan's functioning (SBM):

In a series of email chains obtained by KING 5, a Snohomish County sergeant named Det. I think LE has really dropped the ball on this one.

If it was not for SnoCO SAR there would not have been any search for Jonathan. I think they decided that he left on his own and has every right to do that.

Even after major crimes got the case, the PI that the family hired would send the detective information and they could tell that he was not even looking at the information that was passed to him. He only started reviewing it after it was public that he never opened the file.

Something is really strange about the whole situation.

I've been a long time member of WS but have not posted in many many years. I live very close to this and have sons that are Jonathon's age and I am disturbed that it's been almost 3 months with no answers at all, this day and age, with cameras EVERYWHERE!

I would really like to see some sleuths to start digging into this case and help this family find him!

The most recent thing i can find is an article dated May 28 - from a site called News Nation. Anyone familiar with that and is it reliable?

Ok, it says there was a route Jonathan walked several times a day to the school and back. They are not sure if that's where he was walking. He did not take his jacket or shoes, but his mother's gardening shoes were missing and his Ipad was gone - which they said he never took out of the house.

Just one small correction: the route he walked each day was to the school bus stop, where he caught the school bus. He didn't walk to the school.

I have not heard anywhere that he used the bus stop for school but instead just a spot to walk to.

He took a walk every night in his neighborhood. He followed the same route each time that he took his walk and there is video footage of him returning from his walk the last night his family saw him around 7pm. He came home from the walk and went to his room.

From the NewsNation article (BBM):

"His father, Thao Hoang, said the young adult mainly walks in the area around the home. “He really doesn’t socialize much. He does his daily walk every day from our house up to the school bus stop and back,” he said. “It’s about a mile round trip, and he does that about 3 to 6 times a day.”"

My interpretation of it was that's his own school bus stop. He attends the school district's Transitions program, which is for students 18-21 with disabilities. Transition Program

His family says he was very much dedicated to a routine. His evening walk being part of that routine. His sister even said that neighbors would see him and ask him if you wanted a ride and he would agree and let them take him home and then get out of the car and go back to where he was picked up to finish his walk.

He left the home and slipped his mom's shoes on, didn't grab his coat but took his ipad. Someone was talking to him on his ipad and he had every intention of coming back home IMO

Very concerned and confused at LE response here. Legal adults go missing all the time and there is a concerted effort to find them - Owen Klinger in Oregon, for example (he was 18) or Caleb Harris in Texas (he was 21). It's bizarre to me that it took 5 days for them to put out the Endangered Missing alert and then after a week they said "Well, we can't find him, he probably went off on his own, he's an adult so he can do that."

If he had a set routine of walking the same route every day, it would be easy for someone to notice that and take advantage of it.

absolutely, JH’s dad posted the below in the missing group.

“ We had to ask for the [endangered adult] designation. We are grateful the Autism Foundation brought it to our attention and also reached out to law enforcement about our case to ask why the EMPA had not been issued on Day 1.

Law enforcement also will not investigate Jonathan’s case as an abduction or a crime. We are praying for a change of heart. Current and former law enforcement, contacts at the FBI, and contacts at nearly every level of government all agree Jonathan’s case is an abduction, a crime, and fits the description of a no body homicide.

We had to subpoena Apple and Verizon ourselves with the help of a lawyer and P.I. as this step had not been taken. A judge had no issue at all approving it.

Law enforcement also did not issue letters of preservation, so we are very worried critical data was already wiped. This data and Jonathan’s digital footprint was and is essential to finding him.

The LE mislabeling Jonathan as high functioning is very very harmful. When people read that a high functioning man went missing, they thong it is no big deal, he can fend for himself. Someone who, like Jonathan operates intellectually at the level of nine years old CANNOT fend for themselves, is incredibly vulnerable and therefore endangered.
