Seattle police asking for public’s help in finding 7-year-old Julia Potter, who disappeared with her dad

A 7-year-old girl caught in the middle of a bitter custody battle between her parents has disappeared with her father.

Seattle police are asking for the public’s help in finding Julia and Jason Potter. Julia hasn’t been seen since November 6th, 2014.

Her mother, Ralitsa Potter, keeps a diary filled with daily messages for her daughter.

Court documents show Jason told his attorney he was going “off the grid.”

Detectives say Jason Potter has friends in Tacoma, Bellingham and family in Seattle and Olympia. They are quick to say this is not about catching a dangerous fugitive, it’s about making sure a 7-year-old girl is safe.

“We’re not talking a about a guy that’s necessarily a bad guy. We’re talking about a dad that’s made a bad decision,” said retired detective Myrle Carner with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound, which is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information on their whereabouts.

Still missing What heartbreak for her mother. I can never understand parents doing this to their own children. I imagine she is safe but it's hurting her not seeing her mother, surely.

She may be safe, but there have been many cases of fathers in custody battles killing their own children, so we cannot be certain that she is safe.

SEATTLE — Detectives with the Seattle Police Department are seeking the public’s help in locating a girl who would now be 14-years-old and the man who abducted her seven years ago.

On Nov. 6, 2014, Jason Potter was ordered by the King County Superior Court to turn over custody of his then-7-year-old daughter Julia to her mother.

According to police, Potter fled from a home in north Seattle and hadn’t been heard from until September 2021, when he was possibly seen in Olympia.

Detectives believe Potter may have been recognized by a staff member at a nursing home in Olympia. The incident wasn’t reported to police until after he had left.

Police say Potter is known to have an interest in boats and may be in Bellingham, Tacoma or Oregon City, Oregon. He is 5 foot, 10 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and has hazel eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information on Julia or Jason’s whereabouts is asked to call detective Christianson at 206-684-0330.
