Scandi, you are the veteran. Its your call. LOL

I did write a post but it wouldn't post :waitasec:

OK. Once a person is named a POI by LE, given in a link, it is fair game to use the full name.

Any discussion on possible suspects are to be known here only by their initials. That protects their rights I believe. Now the exception to that would be if they are already in the public eye on a possible related matter, as in a SO. And even then we will use one initial and a name, either or: J Lennon or Jim L.

Minors we don't mention by full name that I am aware of unless they are a player in a case and their internet activity is to not be linked here. As in Misty. At this point I think she is an exception as she is the last person who supposedly saw the victim alive. I read Misty with her full name here everyday.

We can also use initials for minors I believe. When I joined it was a different age. 2003. No MS, and we didn't have all the computer technology to sleuth as fast as we do now. The issue wasn't one back then that I was aware of.

Just a quickie and I know Bean could clarify it better. When in doubt initials are the way to go. Then all you need is a list of the initials so you aren't doing this all the time :waitasec: LOL

That's right Kimster, although I would use POI instead of suspect as that is what LE does now in almost every case until the arrest. Initials are OK for adults but for minors it is best to avoid them except for saying, her daughter, or SS. Once named in the press minors are open for discussion, like Misty, but there is a fine line of discretion to be used about that here at WS.

Maybe Tom's Girl or a Mod can make it more clear. They have refined the TOS since I joined back in 2003.

Thanks Scandi! In this case, they haven't even named a POI. They just did a search. In the Brooke Wilberger case, her remains were found on private property but the owner had NOTHING to do with her murder.

And the fact there is a media report that LE didn't find anything makes it even more important, IMO.

I'm glad everyone asked :grouphug:

has this been released by LE or is this just from our own members? I need to know so i can figure if I need to take the post down or leave it up. I took down the ones with the names, but i can put them back if LE has released the names. because I think they were trying to keep it on the down low ..yes?

JVK said it had been released, but we haven't seen a link. I think he is at the vigil right now and we'll have to ask him when he gets back.

My bad, Scandi...I accidently pushed the wrong button on my ray gun and the whole site went down and all kinds of goofy things have occurred.

When JVK put the photos of the property that had been searched up...he said it was public (or however he worded it). I took it to mean it was released since he put up signs with her name and address on that post which confirmed who the owner really was. I know he had played everything close to the vest due to being a search member and so I figured he knew what he was talking about with it being "released".

Maybe he mistakenly didn't realize her name and addy were on there and was talking about the place itself. I could have misunderstood.

I took some posts down with property owner names on them. I don;t usually moderate this forum, so if this is typically allowed in here let me know please.

I would have thought since the name is of public record on a parcel search and the photos allowed to be released today by LE being of that particular parcel, would make it OK here. LOL Make sense?

I didn;t know if jvk meant that it was public because he photographed it or if it was made public by LE.

Sorry Kimster I didn't see you call my name until just now.

Scandi has it covered.

Let me clarify one thing though please? We only refer to minors by initials when they have been named players in a case.

If they are on the periphery (there was a child in this case that was on the periphery because she was one of the last ppl to see lindsey) we don't discuss them at all. We don't refer to them by initials ~nada.

Privacy issues that could result in legal issues for WS is why we don't discuss ppl with full names and not until the media or LE id's them.

It's tricky however, lol there are ways around it. LOL  I bet Jbean comes back and spanks me :D

the vigil was nice.. I didn't take any pictures because I forgot my camera. The media was there.. so it should be on the news this evening.

Lots of people showed up.. let's hope they come out for the searches next weekend too.

:waitasec: Shoot, I'm not sure. JVK, please weigh in when you can!

Not until it is released by LE. Just because info is public record doesn;t mean we should post it here. Depends on their involvement.
Most can look it up, so in the mean time let's play it safe.

can i ask if the owners are the ones that are living in the house?

  • #233
Do you want me to delete the post on the location, too? It isn't exact or say a name, but gives a rather clear description of where to find it. The media already has it out there on video of the site as we have seen in the photos.

  • #234
Just to clarify, we just try and make sure that we are doing the right thing. If this persons name is released then no problem. But it seems as though they are specifically NOT releasing it. So in that case, we like to abide by LE's rules and not create problems for the investigation.
Hope that makes sense.

i missed everything that was posted....off looking up stuff....then got caught up...and missed stuff.....LOL....

I think if the location has been released we are ok. Like i say, people can sleuth it out, but if LE doesn;t want it released we like to play on the side of the law :)

Jennifer, Is the search of the property completed?

  • #238
thank you JBean!

we have all tried really hard all this time to follow LE lead :)
and sleuth at the same time....it can be a very fine line :)

i feel this thread has done such a awesome job! i can not believe all the smart folks here....its amazing! :)

I agree. Are you talking about posting the photo and name of that SO? I would think he is fair game to point out like this as he lives less than a mile or so from the property searched today. Nothing has been said about linking him to the crime except the possibility by location.

With the name of the property owner on today's search it is of public record IMO. Jvk was allowed to post the photos of that parcel as soon as he evidently got the go ahead the search was done. And here her name nor the name of her two boys were used that I saw. Just the copy of the parcel declaration by the County Assessors office as is. I think that is just intelligent sleuthing.

And of course the two boys at this point should be ID'ed here with initials and in this case I believe they should not be part of the convo until we learn more. Definitely the 17 yr old is initials only and the brother too, unless that is unless the elder is referred to in a link. ETA: The elder is about the age of the SO and living so close maybe they are friends. This might come up.

WHEW This can get pretty particular which is why I appreciate our gals and guys who go a 'Modding. It can be a very difficult job at times. Ya Ya
