Ohana is described as a private person. She was living with her mother at the time she went missing, led a minimalist lifestyle and didn't have a driver's license, relying on public transportation to get around. She was a self-employed massage therapist in 2005 and her clients were mostly in the Seattle, Washington area. Her loved ones do not believe Ohana was dating anyone at the time of her disappearance. Barney Burke of the Port Townsend Leader wrote a great piece about Lyn Ohana’s disappearance back in April of 2006

“Wednesday, April 12, 2006

By Barney Burke, Leader Staff Writer

After four months of searching, the only clue in the disappearance of Lyn Marie (Carter) Ohana might be the indications of a scent-tracking dog brought in by a private investigator her family hired.

Ohana, 49, has been missing since Dec. 8 from the home she shared with her mother in Port Townsend. That evening, she asked her mother, Tillie Carter, to leave the porch light on, saying that she would return later without indicating where she was going.

She never came home.

Three weeks after her disappearance, the family hired Harry Oakes, a private investigator from Longview, Wash., said Lyn’s brother, Bob Carter.

The dog tracked Ohana’s scent from her Monroe Street home to the former Golden Age Club next to Chetzemoka Park, a few blocks away, Carter said. That’s where the trail stopped, “like she got into a car,” said Carter.

Ohana did not have a driver’s license. She usually walked or took public transit, including trips to Seattle, where she worked part-time as a massage therapist. The owner of that business called the family home several days after Ohana disappeared, inquiring as to why she had not shown up for work.

At Fort Worden State Park, the dog didn’t just pick up her scent, it picked up a “death scent,” Carter said. The dog is trained to communicate with body language when it detects a death scent associated with the person it is tracking, he said. The scent was coming from the city side of Fort Worden, said Carter.

The dog was brought to Rat Island, the Portage Canal Bridge at Indian Island, the Resort at Port Ludlow, and the Hood Canal Bridge. In each location, the dog indicated finding the death scent, and it seemed to be coming from the direction of Seattle, he said.

“That leads me to believe Lyn was taken to Seattle,” Carter said. The dog also found the death scent in the vicinity of the Edmonds ferry terminal, he said.

There have been no further attempts to track Ohana with dogs, said Carter and Port Townsend Police Sgt. Ed Green.

“We have nothing to support any theory at this point,” Green said. There is no evidence that she was harmed, and no evidence that she disappeared of her own volition, as people sometimes do, he explained.

“I can’t emphasize enough,” Sgt. Green pleaded, “Anybody who’s got anything” should contact Port Townsend police at 360-385-2322”

Interesting… Thanks so much for sharing. IMO, that final paragraph implies the police were mainly interested in Lyn’s brother. The same brother interviewed for the article posted in this thread.

Yes, that’s how I read it too. If it’s true, that’s a really 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 brother. I guess there never was a courtcase, maybe he doesn’t even know he ever was a suspect. Whether he actually was guilty or not.

And you’re welcome.
My heart goes out to Lyn, too. Whatever it was that happened to her, it most probably was caused by another human being and cost her her life.

I wondered if one of the local Buddhist groups were meeting at the park Lyn was tracked to. Maybe Lyn arranged to meet with a fellow practitioner or someone interested in Buddhism?

Very possible. I think it said somewhere that she wore some kind of head scarf, do Buddhists wear head scrafs? Not to my knowledge, but it’s possible. Hare Krishna also comes to mind. What do you think about Ohana’s disappearence?

I came across Lyn’s disappearance while researching potential victims of Israel Keyes. After looking into the available information, my feeling is that Lyn left that night specifically to meet someone and who ever that person was is likely responsible for her disappearance.

It seems unlikely, to me at least, that a 49 year old woman of modest means(my impression from the available information) would be murdered by one of her 3 siblings prior to the death of their only apparent source of inheritance. If it turns out that Lyn’s family was heavily involved in illegal activities or activities that put them in contact with some criminal element, I’d shift my focus entirely on them.

So based on the available information, I believe Lyn made plans to meet someone she was familiar with at a Park relatively close to her home. (Bear in mind I am not a local to Washington state so my research has been entirely based on the little bit of information I’ve gather off of articles from the wayback machine which were largely written by Port Townsend Journalist Barney Burke). That park was across the street from a shuttered club for retirees ie it would have been relatively dark at that time of night. Whoever is responsible for Lyn’s disappearance seems to have taken Lyn to Fort Worden State Park where, based off the findings of the PI hired by Lyn’s brother(suspect?), she was ultimately murdered.

I was able to confirm that local Buddhist groups did meet at that particular park but only after Lyn’s death. They may have met at said park prior to this incident but I have not been able to confirm that any Asana met there during the period Lyn disappeared.

Lyn also worked as a massage therapist in Seattle. She relied on public transportation & apparently hitchhiked to work. Perhaps she met the person responsible for her disappearance during her travels to & from work. There’s nothing to say Lyn used the Port Townsend ferry in her commute to work currently but it does appear to be an option for anyone commuting to Seattle for work. Maybe one of Lyn’s clients is responsible? I wasn’t able to find anything of value on Archived Craigslist post but I am, admittedly, 🤬🤬🤬🤬 at using the wayback machine. Maybe someone tech savvier can help?

I’d like a map of the death scent the private investigators cadaver dog picked up. Did the dog pick up the death scent in a path accessible by a person parked on a ferry ride? As in was Lyn transported in her killers trunk via ferry? Or did her killer drive her directly to the spot her scent was last picked up by the cadaver dogs?

I found her too while looking at possible Keyes victims, and I still think it’s possible she is a victim of his. Despite the FBI writing her brother is the main suspect. It’s been over a decade since they wrote that, and no arrests have been made. I’d like to know what the whole deal with the death scent was, and where exactly it was detected. Keyes did say he murdered the atleast one WA victim in the same place where he ”took” them.
It’s good to bear in mind almost all of the ferry rides are Kim, not Israel. Keyes name is never redacted, so if there is a redaction it is someone other than Keyes. Have you checked out the timeline on lastknowncontact@com?

I did check the timeline on last known contact(Great information there). Although I largely agree that those redacted columns likely indicate that Kim purchased/rode the ferry, I generally try to at least allow for the possibility that Keyes may have been using a card belonging to a family member, ex etc for some of these records.

I can’t say there’s any reason to believe Keyes is involved here. Hoping someone is still looking for Lyn…

Me too. She just disappeared, but we know that something happened. Because noone disappeares into thin air. That death scent find is very interesting and weird. If it’s legit, and about her, she died there and was then immediately removed by car. If you have any links to info about that place where they found the scent or anything else related, I’d love to read it!!

One of the strangest things about Lyn’s disappearance is that the article above seems to indicate that Lyn’s scent was detected on Rat Island. That particular island is only accessible by boat.

I was also struck by the fact that the dog tracked Lyn’s scent to Fort Worden state park. It’s probably a little difficult to see the finer details from the attached picture, but the park has several restrooms(outhouse style?) & a military cemetery as well.

See the link below for information on accessing Rat Island from the main land. I think I remembered Keyes mentioned camping overnight at an island only accessible by boat but my understanding is there are dozens of small islands in the PNW that fit description.

Rat Island
I think the island Keyes referenced camping on was one in the middle of Lake Ozette, not one off the coast.

But either way yeah the Rat Island hit is really strange and I have no idea what to make of it.

Keyes also kept his boat in Port Angeles at some point in time. I don’t think It’s impossible he took the boat to the waters outside Port Townsend too.
