WA - Major security incident at SeaTac Airport. All planes are grounded, Aug 2018

He didn't try to destroy anything other than the plane. Not sure what extraordinary skills were needed here that he couldn't have learned in a flight simulator. After all he didn't even have to land the plane.

What he did people pay to see! I used to go all the time they are incredible experiences!

He did this - as perfectly as these guys! Getting out of the bottom part of the loop is incredible skills - he did it perfectly the crowd would have roared and cheered !!

How much time have you spent in an airplane cockpit? There are schools that train pilots in a 4 year bachelor's degree program. The military takes months.

Long ago I was a recreational pilot's kid. I am still occasionally referred to as "Autopilot" because I was able to maintain course while my Dad did other tasks -- resetting radios, checking charts, reviewing flight plan with towers, correctly switching from one control area to the next. Too short to see over the cowling (dashboard) I was routinely able to fly by the instruments under supervision BRIEFLY. This did NOT happen on my first trip in the cockpit, either.

Even in a small plane, there are many, many instruments, sets of radios, gauges, indicators. Some of these are electronic systems, some are physical systems. Toggles, buttons, switches in front of you, in front of the other seat for safety -- but within reach for solo flight, switches over your head, the aircraft equivalents of accelerator & steering, flaps, the list goes on.

Flying is tiring, physically & mentally, there is a lot going on in there.

And -- aircraft move in 3 dimensions: pitch, roll, and yaw -- while your car moves in two and your house relatively not at all. That's likely part of Mr. Russell's lightheadedness.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has flown this aircraft or an actual simulator for this aircraft. That simulator would have the controls & switches in their actual locations.

I wonder if the ground radios are generally left on this airline?

That level of control from a video game? Skeptic here.

YMMV, check your fuel gauges in pattern and KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO OPERATE THE CONTROL TO SWITCH TANKS.

TY!

Have been surprised at some of the "no big deal" notions!

My goodness!

As far as we know he did the takeoff without any ground control assistance- missing half of the crew - performed an awesome perfect roll - with a flawless end of the roll - in a turboprop-- while managing communications by himself - after working a full shift - in a cockpit filled vomit - while lightheaded - never loosing any stability in flight -with a brilliant sense of humor !!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Well, we know the guy was able to do it, and there is no information that he was taught how to fly an actual plane, at least so far. So until some information is reported to suggest otherwise, I believe the guy learned it from flight simulator. It is also possible he had flight lessons although that hasn't been reported.
911 hijackers did go to flight school, but they did not practice how to fly commercial airliners. Yet they managed to do it and hit the targets.

and the ride was like a rollercoaster in all four of em!!

also have been surprised at some of media questions yesterday/ Dont you need a key to start them. I would think they might have seen a movie or tv show !!

And the shock at access to aircraft

The backdoor operations operate under the old ways entire airports did before 911. You went anywhere ( with a delicious cigg in your hand thank you !)

Sorry - there is NO security "behind the scenes" Hundreds have acess to any aircraft at the gates. Although it looks like a parking lot (!) nothing is locked . Doors are open galley doors baggage holds

Fuelers, gate agents, catering, deicing maintenance ,towing drivers .baggage handlers flight crews have total access to any aircraft out there guys that drive the baggage to each aircraft.

It is like a perfectly executed broadway production!

THe myth is that no one can get there without being cleared noone is clearing anyone. If one is wearing some thing around their neck there in

the backdoors have like keycards but after that the joint is is yours!

If ya think about folks that work in that environment who is really checking to see if every person they pass has one -- they got there own tasks to handle .

There will have to be a calamity that costs billions to secure up the back area operations. They basically would have to create a TSA 2!

One TSA is more than enough no?

I am voting 5 days before a big announcement! A committee will be formed to review this issue! (Release date : 2037!)

Love reading your stuff, CARIIS. . . your personality always shines through.
About that "Andrew" line: could it be dialogue from a movie or TV show? That's how it first struck me, almost like he was "in character" for just a second, then returned to his normal "ah shucks" personality. MOO

ty i like reading all your alls too!

that is what it was like to me - it was creepy and a similair tone of voice of used when he responded to alaska would prob give you anything the yeh right was growly too

anyone know his dads name? or a brother?? supervisor maybe?

IMO

I keep wondering about that too. Has it been reported what his middle name is?

at 09 is an aerial of crash site

Aerial view of stolen plane crash site on Ketron Island

UPDATED: Horizon employee used tug to move plane before stealing it, stayed aloft for more than an hour

On 11 October 1999, Phatswe commandeered an Aérospatiale ATR 42-320, registration number A2-ABB, from the Air Botswana section of the terminal at Sir Seretse Khama airport and took off. For two hours he circled the airport, radioing the control tower and announcing his intention to kill himself. The airport was evacuated as a precaution; passengers later reported a good deal of panic in the terminal. Officials in the tower attempted to convince him to land; efforts were led by General Tebogo Masire, then deputy commander of the Botswana Defence Force.[1]

On 25 May 2003, a Boeing 727-223, registered N844AA, was stolen at Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, Luanda, Angola.[1] Its disappearance prompted a worldwide search by the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). No trace of the aircraft has since been found.

but ..........he.................did......................................

If he could land the plane, sure. Landing is the hard part.

Barrel rolls are not difficult to do in simulators.

Wow, Cariis, that video. I would have been scared to death from where that video was shot. And you know it was loud, too. It is pure luck that he didn't down the plane on people's houses.

Exactly. I don't even understand what some posters are trying to imply here. The guy had enough knowledge to take off and then nose dive into the ground. Nothing suggests he was an expert pilot.

That's what all of the pilots and ATCs are saying on the expert forums I've been reading. That is, that anyone can take off and fly a plane--the reason for all of the training is for learning to land.

Plus they are laughing at everyone who is talking about his "perfect" aerobatics because I guess they are anything but perfect. It's way to technical for me to understand, though.

I... kind of understand what they are saying. I'm not close to being an actual pilot or working on the physics engine for a flight sim. But his barrel roll was basically what you'd do if you tried it in a flight sim. If you are impressed by what this guy did, go to a good air show. Oshkosh, Wings Over Houston.

I'd bet most people here, if they picked up a flight simulator (and there are free ones), could probably get off the ground as soon as they read the instructions, maybe with a crash or two as they realized that you want to gently pull up.

I don't think anyone is implying anything.

he was in the air for an hour.

This is known as flying an airplane!!

Just reporting the facts which are:

he stole a plane

he got her airborne

he cruised about safely

he performed some aerobatics

and as promised, decided to end his life by putting her on the ground

those are just the facts

I don't think the term expert has been applied. Amazing, incredible, unbelievable have showed up ....................but not expert.

the notion that one hops in cranks her up and goes is not how it happens

here is how it typically happens:
