WA WA - Marizela Perez, 18, UW student, Seattle, 5 March 2011

  • #121
Thanks, SassyBenton. I figured I must have overlooked that somehow since it seemed so obvious. So she headed to Green Lake, huh? Seems like she stayed in some heavily peopled areas, at least at first. Poor Marizela - this is so sad. If it's correct that she was depressed and possibly suicidal, somehow it seems even more heartbreaking that she was feeling that way surrounded by so many. People watched her buy those items and never suspected what they might be for. I hope her poor family gets some kind of answer soon.

Northern Alliance Radio Network, the Goodbye 2011 Edition!

[snip]

Marizela Perez has been missing in the Seattle area for more than nine months now. Marizela’s case has a connection here at Hot Air, as she is the cousin of the Boss Emeritus, Michelle Malkin. Michelle is trying to spread the word through Facebook and Q13Fox/KCPQ in Seattle. We want to encourage prayers for Marizela’s family, and also try to reach anyone in the area who knows where Marizela might be and ask them to contact the police.

The search has its own website now, Find Marizela, for the latest in the efforts to bring Marizela home. There is also a fund for the family to keep the search efforts going. Be sure to check there and at Michelle’s site for further developments, and keep the family in your prayers.

America’s Most Wanted is now on the case, too.

One year later: Marizela is still missing; Plus: A public appeal to Google
March 5, 2012 02:40 AM

Exactly one year ago today, my 18-year-old cousin Marizela (known affectionately to her family and friends as “Emem” or “Mei”) Perez disappeared from the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

She is still missing.

Those words form on the computer screen with disembodied disbelief. But my heart is screaming:

SHE IS STILL MISSING. WHY, DEAR GOD, WHY?!!!!!

A sad, frustrating, and enraging anniversary

It was a year ago today that Marizela Perez slipped away from her family and friends and went missing after having last been seen leaving a convenience store in Seattle. While the case remains open, there has been almost no change in the investigation in months. In part, that is because so many young people go missing, but also in part to a strange lethargy among those who might help solve the mystery of what happened to Marizela.

So sad, it's unbelievable that it has been a year already.

Seattle natives, a question - if MP had indeed committed suicide via one of the bodies of water in the area, what would you say is the probability that her body would have been found? Have other people who committed suicide in that way typically been found quickly/at all?

Just weighing the likelihood of that... Because if suicides who go that route are typically found after not too long, then that might mean a higher chance that she met with foul play are leaving the store...which then opens up a whole 'nother realm of areas to look for her in. :(

Thinking of Marizela and her family :rose:

I'm aware of several likely suicide cases where someone jumped from a bridge into a river and has yet to be found. But that's not just in this area.

Shantina Smiley supposedly (if she met the same fate as her son) washed into Puget Sound and has never been found. It's been 2 years.

Another problem with the Sound is...a body could enter in once place, and end up in an entirely different area. It's not like a river that flows from Point A to Point B. With the tides (although somewhat predictable) a body could potentially get anywhere, even out into the Ocean.

Detectives Stumped By Broad Daylight Disappearance

..... cameras caught her shopping inside of a Safeway in Seattle's University District. With her green Starbucks mug in-hand, she walked right by a camera, and exited the store a short time later. She hasn't been seen since

According to this timeline, his whereabouts were unknown at the time Marizela disappeared but he was in the Western United States months later. I know it was thought that Marizela was headed to Discovery Park the day she disappeared, this man looked for victims in remote places such as parks and campgrounds. I frequently go walking in Discovery Park, it is huge and has plenty of remote areas. One could easily be attacked without others seeing or hearing anything. I always go with a friend, even in the daytime I don’t feel completely safe on the trails by myself.

I'm still wondering what happened to Marizela. Does anyone know if the Seattle PD are still investigating her disappearance/attempting to recover her? Is it commonly thought that she killed herself somewhere after she disappeared? I know that it was revealed she bought sleeping pills, juice, garbage bags and some other "interesting items" during the Safeway trip. I just cannot believe that if that is true she hasn't been recovered yet in a Seattle park - there are always people everywhere!

Some of her last known moments were captured inside the Safeway store then her phone "moved" towards Greenlake (she either took a bus or got a ride willingly or unwillingly) and somewhere around Greenlake her phone pinged for the last time indicating that she disposed of her phone. I am very curious if they have any camera footage of her en route from the Safeway store to around Greenlake - I do not think someone took her or abducted her within this area, I believe she travelled alone and I do not know why she would have ditched her phone around there if she ultimately wanted to go to Discovery Park unless it was to "throw off her last known location". The "sightings of her" at the bus station downtown and in Florida obviously aren't absolute but her AIM screename logged onto her account several days after her disappearance or someone else logged onto her computer (she was in possession of her laptop in the Safeway tapes).

Ah this case really bothers me and it saddens me that Marizelas friends and family still don't have answers, a part of me still maybe thinks she might be alive and just had to "disappear" to restart her life the way she wanted. I know how gloomy and terrible Seattle can be in the winter and the school she was enrolled at can be very competitive and difficult.

The case archive link above is not correct. Here is the right one for Marizela's case.

I wish there would be news. When I see "garbage bags" then I just think "landfill".

Thanks for the archive.

I read on an article in the archive that Seattle police said the searches at Discovery Park didn't reveal anything related to her disappearance but they were searching there for her because one of the last searches on her phone were for the park hours.

If she was suicidal why would she care what the hours were? Wouldn't she just go on in - there are ways to get into Discovery Park everywhere if you are on foot. The scariest thought is that she did end her life inside a garbage bag and somehow that bag ended up in a landfill but I can't help but think if someone was picking up a bag that had a 5'5" college student inside they wouldn't notice that there was a person inside (it would be very heavy dead weight, you would feel that it was a person in there) and wouldn't they notice a "smell" because of it? Also if she jumped somewhere into the water around Discovery Park she would have washed up to shore/been discovered by now. This case makes me really sad and I hope that one day it's all figured out.

A garbage bag wouldn't have to be lifted by a person if it was inside a dumpster.

Where is Marizela? I know it seems like the general feeling is that she took her own life and no one has recovered her body yet. I know Discovery Park was searched but nothing really found. Does LE know for sure that she took her life? I'm still really curious about her screename signing on a few days later, who ended up with her laptop and why/where they found it, or if it was MP. Sometimes I wonder if she "dissapeared" herself to start a new life. I don't suspect foul play and I feel like LE ruled that out pretty quickly with video footage, pings, etc.

Also really upsetting that mobile/internet/etc companies won't release her information to the family because she's over 18 but you'd think that regarding the circumstances they would....really terrible I think.

Hope to see a resolution for this case. Thoughts go out to MPs family/friends. I hope 2013 brings them answers.
