My condolences. Has any progress been made in making contact with the Mark L Ashland from LinkedIn? My initial instinct was that there was just lingering information on the internet of a deceased individual (I have several sites like Spokeo and Peoplefinder believing my 107 year old grandparents are still raising at my current address just by once in a while using their names pseudonymously in placing online orders) but LinkedIn is supposed to be used by real people.

That combined with your info about the apartment getting cleaned out makes me feel its worth pursuing this individual for additional information.
