Somebody has some splaining to do and I don't think I even have to say who. Two people go somewhere, one comes back, the other one turns up murdered. The math might be real simple on this one.

In January 2021, a section of femur bone was sent to Othram, Inc. for DNA extraction, testing, and a DNA profile that could be uploaded to genealogical databases. The funding for this laboratory work was provided by Audiochuck.

In April 2021, Othram successfully obtained a DNA extract that was sufficient for testing and they developed a DNA profile. The profile revealed that the decedent was predominantly Native American. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office uploaded the Othram DNA profile to GEDmatch and obtained a match at the great-niece level, which allowed the Medical Examiner’s Office to work with Native American Genealogist Martha Coleman to build family trees.

Through family history and archived newspaper articles, the Medical Examiner’s Office learned that Blaine Has Tricks was in the Spokane area from 1974 until 1977, after he took a train to Spokane, Wash.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs obtained DNA from three of Blaine’s relatives. DNA testing of two of Blaine’s nephews confirmed the identification of Marysville Landfill John Doe as Blaine Has Tricks, who was born on May 21, 1939.

Anyone with information about Blaine’s activities in 1977 is asked to contact the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (425) 388-3845.

Statement from the Family

Blaine Has Tricks was member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal. Verle Red Tomahawk, Blaine’s nephew provided the following statement on behalf of the family:

“We are thankful for all of the hard work everyone put into getting Blaine identified. Others would have given up a long time ago but you didn’t. We appreciate your persistence. The last members of Blaine’s family are thankful that he was identified and his remains are being sent home to where he belongs.”

My apologies for my previous post. Apparently he was in Spokane for a few years...initially I interpreted as he and the other party left North Dakota for Washington and the other party returned without him relatively soon afterwards.

Blaine Has Tricks disappeared in 1977 at the age of 38. He had hopped a train with his brother, Clayton "Ross" Has Tricks, to Spokane, Washington, and gone transient in the state, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. He was last known to be in the Spokane area in February 1977. His brother returned home to North Dakota, but he was never heard from again and was not reported missing.

On Sept. 7, 1977, a bulldozer operator discovered human remains in the Marysville, Washington, landfill. Investigators determined that the refuse in the landfill had come from business dumpsters in downtown Seattle. It's not known how or when Has Tricks ended up in Seattle.

Authorities classified the death as a homicide after an autopsy. The cause of death was undetermined due to trauma to the body from being transported to the landfill, and from the bulldozing processes there.

In April 2021, Othram Inc. developed a DNA profile that revealed the decedent was predominantly Native American. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office uploaded the Othram DNA profile to GEDmatch and obtained a match at the great-niece level, which allowed the office to work with Native American Genealogist Martha Coleman to build family trees.

Through family history and archived newspaper articles, the Medical Examiner’s Office learned that Blaine Has Tricks was in the Spokane area from 1974 until 1977, after he took a train there.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs obtained DNA from three of Blaine’s relatives. DNA testing of two of them confirmed the identification of Blaine Has Tricks, who was born on May 21, 1939. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Matt Lacy officially identified the remains.

“We are thankful for all of the hard work everyone put into getting Blaine identified," nephew Verle Red Tomahawk said. "Others would have given up a long time ago but you didn't. We appreciate your persistence. The last members of Blaine's family are thankful that he was identified and his remains are being sent home to where he belongs.”
Has Tricks' remains have been returned home to his family in North Dakota. He will be buried at the St. James Catholic Cemetery in Shields.

In January 2021, a section of femur bone was sent to Othram. The hope was that Othram could develop their own suitable DNA extract from the skeletal remains. The funding for Othram's work was generously provided by Audiochuck. The Othram team is grateful for their ongoing support.

In April 2021, Othram successfully obtained a DNA extract that was sufficient for testing, after multiple rounds of extraction and human enrichment. Othram scientists used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing to develop a DNA profile that could be uploaded to genealogical databases. Biogeographical analysis of the DNA profile revealed that the man was predominantly Native American. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office performed a genealogical search and obtained a match at the great-niece level. The SCMEO team built family trees with the assistance of genealogist Martha (Thompson) Coleman of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota and relatives Tipiziwin Tolman, Eugene “Pepper” Young, Maggie and Kelly Swanson, Eugene Four, Jr., Verle Red Tomahawk, and Lynette Pretends Eagle. Through family history the SCMEO team learned that Blaine Has Tricks disappeared in 1977 when he hopped a train to Spokane, Washington with his brother, Clayton “Ross” Has Tricks. Ross returned home to North Dakota, but Blaine was never heard from again and was not reported missing.

Special Agent Molanna Clifford with the Bureau of Indian Affairs obtained DNA from three of Blaine’s relatives. DNA testing of two of Blaine’s nephews confirmed the identification of Marysville Landfill Doe as Blaine Has Tricks, who was born on May 31, 1939, and was 38 years old when he went missing. Old newspaper records place Blaine in Spokane, WA in February 1977 and it is unknown when and how he came to Seattle. If you have any information about Blaine or this case, please call the SCSO tip line at 425-388-3845.

Blaine was returned home to his family North Dakota.

Mittleman also pointed out that Elbow Shield’s case isn’t the first time that Othram identified a Native person through DNA methods. Working with family members and law enforcement from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, along with a genealogist from the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, the company was able to ensure Blaine Has Tricks returned to his home community in North Dakota — some 45 years after he went missing.

“We worked with tribal law enforcement to actually get to this answer,” Mittleman said of Hat Tricks, whose body had gone unidentified for decades after being discovered in Washington state in September 1977. Similar to Elbow Shield’s case, relatives of Has Tricks provided DNA samples that Othram used to confirm the identity of their loved one, who was 38 years old when he went missing from Standing Rock. That participation, combined with the company’s genetic methods, are key to providing the answers that families have long been looking for.

“People need to understand what’s out there and what’s possible so that they can be a part of it,” Mittleman said.
