WA WA - Nancy Moyer, 36, Tenino, 6 March 2009

Thank you carbuff and Scandi, good points both of you.

Hoping for the latter carbuff.

Scandi, if Howell is responsible, do you think he will confess once he is sentenced? Not much to lose in doing so.

Pierce County sheriff’s detectives believe the bones found earlier this month in a wooded area near Harts Lake belonged to an adult homicide victim.
Investigators believe the person was killed somewhere else, then dumped off a hiking trail, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Friday. He declined to say how the as-yet-unidentified person was killed.

Detectives hope to learn more when they get the results of DNA typing and an examination of the bones by a dentist and anthropologist. The results could be weeks away.

Thanks for that Knox. It sounds like this was primarily a skeleton so could have been there for awhile. We also now know this person was killed by someone and then likely dumped by that trail out in the boonies. That would make homicide turn into murder real quick like.

Do we have any more info on Vanda Boone, who she was and how she was taken? Tenino is not far away from HL and this Howell pled guilty to her murder and with LE considering him as a POI in Nancy's case, it really says allot don't you think?

I want her to be alive but also want her family to have some peace as this has been very hard for them. If she is gone it would be a blessing for her family to have her found.

WOW, can you imagine a cop pulling your car over and you have a dead person propped up in the front seat of the vehicle ???

Mealy said Tuesday that detectives think Boone was either walking or riding a bike on the Yelm-Tenino Trail on Sunday afternoon when she was attacked and killed.

No Scandi I cannot imagine that. She was in a sleeping bag as I recall.

Howell asked someone to help him move Vanda's body. That person flagged down a police officer to report Howell. Howell told LE that he found her dead and wanted to save her family the expense of a funeral. I wonder if he was stalking Vanda or it was just a chance encounter?

I was surprised they cleared him to stand trial ...

Hi again Knox, I think it all depends on his profile, his reason for killing, what drives him to want a certain type of victim, etc. If he killed Nancy and then Vanda {sp} {which were about 1.5 years apart}, I would doubt Nancy was his first kill. It was SO audacious for her to be taken out of her home like she was - that takes a perp who is 'weathered in' so to speak. IMO

I also think LE has really gone out on a limb to name him as a POI in Nancy's case when her body hasn't been found yet. There is some reason why they believe he took her.

So I doubt he would talk as there might be others out there he is responsible for. If LE is telling the public he may have killed 2 ladies, I think the odds are he has killed more. What do you think about that?

It has been stated there is at least one Serial Killer working in Wa State. I wonder if it is Howell ??? Maybe he likes small women and is working down the ladder to teenagers. IMO

PS: In my 'playful' years I went out with a man who was too bizarre sexually and stopped seeing him. The last thing he told me was he liked his gals small. Years later it dawned on me he might be a pedo and have had nightmares about him. Good lookin', ya you bet, but off the track of normalcy. I think people like him can turn into 'Howell's' over time.

xox

And then Kayla went missing 4 mos before Vanda was killed, and she was taken from Cowlitz County acc to the papers. It is all very 'relative location wise, these 3 unfortunate women.

Thanks Knox for the link. I almost got sick at the thought of a 60 year old gal being attacked by this weirdo. I pictured her in my mind as about Nancy's age.

Reading from your link above: " . . When Howell was pulled over Sunday night, he said he wanted to bury the body to save the family the cost of a funeral. He had brought “plastic bags, a sleeping bag, zip ties, bungee-type elastic cords and a 10-pound weight with him,” court papers state.

Isn't it odd he was so organized with what he had in his truck to use in his crime? I think so.

Knox, I bet LE has found something in his truck or on those 'things' in his truck like the sleeping bag with Nancy's blood on it. It has to be really something concrete IMO for them to name him as a POI in her case, right? And if he killed Nancy he probably killed her the same way he did Vanda. Pure overkill IMO, slitting her throat, choking her and blunt force trauma. She must have fought him back. God Bless Vanda after what she went thru. So awful. xox

Yikes the possibilities are growing!! Susan Powell? I haven't followed her case, I'll have to look at it tomorrow.

Scandi I always think of Lindsey too. My imagination is wild I admit, but if Howell was a wanderer ...

I think the odds would be be fairly high that Howell has killed others.

Pooped tonight, so I'll comment more tomorrow.

ECK though about your friend Scandi, glad you weren't as adventurous as he and dumped his a$$!!!

I'm sorry for all those posts tonight, but when I read that Howell was a POI in Nancy's case I think I went into a state of shock. Here in Portland with Kyron's case we can't figure out why TH hasn't been listed as a POI in his disappearance. So just having that POI status is major.

I'm pooped too. I've got to stop reading as I'm learning about more missing gals in Wa and am stymied that there could be so many including Shantina Smiley, Rachael Anderson and Susan Powell. Tomoz I'll have to check to learn more about these gals.

OT: Scandi I was looking at address' for Howell and this came up ...
3325 Gonzaga Ct Se, OLYMPIA, WA 98503

Why does this sound so familiar? Was it an attempted abduction and we ran across it in Lindsey's case? More tomorrow, I am really off to bed now.

LOL It is the scourge of WS ~ to actually be able to turn the mind off and take a break when our minds are still running a mile a minute !!!

I'll go a lookin' tomoz, go back on all the attempted abductions in that Thurston County area. We have a poster in Lacey who might remember them all and I'll PM her. Need to say Hi to her anyway. xox

I wonder if the connection is that they know he was selling meat in the area about the time Nancy disappeared.

I think if they had any hard evidence, like Nancy's blood in his truck, they'd have charged him.

  • #513
I wonder if Nancy ever bought meat from Howell? Could that be the link? It was in her freezer or maybe in looking at her financial records there was a check to him? A price list found in her home?

At the time it was meaningless, but after he killed Vanda Detectives put two and two together.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Or maybe one of the neighbors bought from him on the same day.

The way her house was left would fit with going to the door to deal with somebody familiar but not personal. Like telling the meat guy, "No, I don't need anything today," thinking you'll go right back to your wine and relaxation.

Little O/T - but I have to tell you guys this story!

Last weekend, we had the garage door open and were working around the yard and house. So, this meat truck pulls up and a guy gets out and asks if we'd like to look at their steaks and chicken. My hubby was all over that idea and made a beeline for the truck. Course, I was having thoughts about the POI in this case and what he had done and I wasn't about to look at anything these dudes were selling!

I didn't want to have to explain it to DH, so I just said, "Really Honey? Meat from a truck? Ewwwww." He got rid of those guys, but I think he was really disappointed!

Detectives are investigating whether Howell might also be responsible for the disappearance of Nancy Moyer, who went missing from her Tenino home in March 2009, and has never been found, Thurston County Chief Criminal Deputy James Chamberlain said.

Chamberlain said there is nothing specific that connects Sunday’s homicide to Moyer’s disappearance, but detectives will look very closely to see if there is a link because of the proximity of Sunday’s crime scene to Moyer’s home.

Moyer vanished from her home in the 700 block of state Route 507 on March 6, 2009, leaving her car, purse, wallet, credit cards and identification in the home. When Moyer’s husband went to the home to drop off their daughters on March 6, the front door was ajar, the television was on and a glass of red wine had been placed on the coffee table in the living room.

Hamilton and Detective Dave Haller, who both have been investigating Moyer’s disappearance for almost a year and a half, also are assigned to Sunday night’s homicide, Chamberlain said.
I missed this earlier. Did not realize Detective Haller was the investigator in Vanda's murder. I find that encouraging, he knows all the details in Nancy's disappearance. Hoping something he found out about Howell/Vanda's murder rang a bell with him.

Nancy Moyer was last seen on Friday after she finished up her workday at the state Department of Ecology in Olympia, Washington. She dropped off a co-worker on her way to her Tenino home. Then came Sunday when her family realized she was missing. Nancy's husband who she seperated from two years ago, routinely drops off their daughters, ages 10 and 11, at her house. When he came over with the girls, almost everything appeared to be in place. The light was on as was the TV. Nancy's purse and keys were inside. Her car was parked out front. The only thing missing was Nancy, who was nowhere to be found. She left the TV on and glass of wine, half drank, on the coffee table. She had a pack of cigarrettes and her lighter outside where she usually would go out and have a cigarette but not leave them out there. All of her belongings including her purse and car were left at home.

Bernard Keith Howell, who plead guilty to killing another woman, has been named a person of interest in Nancy's disappearance.
