Human remains may be those of torture victim

ACOMA, Wash. -- Human remains found near Harts Lake earlier this month may belong to a victim of brutal torture that was captured on tape, according to investigators.

The human bones were found in a wooded area near a hiking trail on March 10, prompting Pierce County detectives to launch a homicide investigation.

The medical examiner has not positively identified the remains, but said there are several notable similarities between the remains and the torture victim seen in the footage being bound, gagged and tortured with a knife, according to the statement of probable cause.

Oh My God that is so awful. I feel ill too. There are some real sickos out there.

Strange it's been 21 days and the body has not been ID'ed yet. Maybe they are just saying that as they don't want any info about the body put out there.

Deputy Prosecutor Powers said Howell hasn’t yet been interviewed about any other cases, because it’s inappropriate while this case is unfinished.


Thurston County sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said they expect to talk with Howell after he is sentenced.

Jimerson said he and co-counsel Patrick O’Connor spoke at length with Howell about an insanity plea. However, if an individual is found not guilty by reason of insanity, they can be held for the maximum term of the charge, which in this case would be life, Jimerson said.


“I think this presents a little more certainty for him” knowing his incarceration will end at some point, he said.

Great, if Howell was involved with Nancy's disappearance, he'll never admit it.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office says human remains have been found along a roadside in the Morton area.

Investigators say a man called 911 on Thursday to report finding the skeleton when he pulled off the highway to take a break.

I so hope the finding of these remains will lead to one family's knowledge of what happened to their loved one. Besides Nancy, there are other missing person's in WA state.

Police said a man called 911 at 5:30 p.m. to report he had pulled off the highway to take a break. As he got out of his car, he noticed the skeletal remains of a human off the side of the road, the man told officers. The area where the remains were found is rural and wooded.The gender, age and how long the remains were at that site are not yet known.

I'm actually amazed that anyone finds a body here with all the wooded and rugged terrain on this side of the mountains. Lots of places to hide a body.

I think that WA state has a lot of bodies that have been found, but
I don't think it is any more than any other state.
I think it is WA's turn to have the missing be found.

I am always reminded of the Green River killer and how long it took for them to find all his victims, if they ever did.

And right now there is the discovery of the remains of eight women on the east coast.

The remains have been identified as Michael L Riemer, Jr. His story is very interesting. He has been missing for 25 years. His girlfriend was found murdered(25 years ago), her body was found then a mile from where his body was found now. Front page story at thenewstribune.com

This is so frustrating! If Howell is a POI, shouldn't they at least question him about Nancy?

Nothing significant came out of the interview with Bernard K. Howell III, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.

“He gave us nothing, denied any involvement,” Lt. Greg Elwin said.

Is Howell telling the truth? No way to tell of course, but it's like I said a couple of posts up; His plea deal and not going with an insanity defense (even though he was known to have mental health issues) allows him the possibility of parole in the future. If he admitted he killed Nancy, he'll never see the light of day.

I wonder if they could entice him with another plea deal? One which would allow Nancy's remains to be found, but no additional sentence? I wonder how her family would feel about something like that?

I am not assuming he is guilty, I just want to make sure he is telling the truth.

This is the third Mother's Day Nancy has missed with her girls.
My thoughts are with them today.
