"A dive team recovered a key fob from Icicle Creek, which was consistent with the key fob belonging to Decker's truck. Following this evidence discovery, a search team from U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service located clothing and skeletal remains believed to be of Travis Decker on Sep. 18 at around 2 p.m."

"A shirt, pair of shorts, bracelet and chewing tobacco recovered from the scene were consistent with belonging to Decker..."

"Several bones were collected and sent to the Washington State Crime Lab for DNA testing."

Well, I might be jumping the gun... but if he was still in that bright green t-shirt (and shorts) he was in to pick up pizza (IIRC) or last seen... this doesn't sound planned to the effect he was planning to escape through the wilderness with some gear and start a new life.

That darned bright neon green t-shirt sounds like one of the big clues these remains were found. Small miracle in a way these remains were found at all.

It sounds like maybe the key fob was the key?

I had heard about the fob but had not known it was found by divers before the remains, clothing, and other items were discovered, as this article states.

It's hard to know, but I wonder if the green object (shirt) would have been enough on its own to have alerted searchers or if the key fob receives the credit. My best guess is that the shirt would have been spotted regardless, but it sure didn't hurt that the fob said 'look here!'

True, I hear ya... the fob started things rolling sounds like and got them to that area.

For the drone, if that green shirt wasn't so bright and vibrant to catch someone's eye, those remains may not have been found. If he wore a black, dark gray, gray, or any earth tone colored shirt it might've blended into the environment and they might still be searching for him.

It'll be nice for LE, locals living nearby, hikers, the family, friends and WD of course to maybe breath a sigh of relief now that he won't show up again or cause more violence.

The key fob was found by the diving team in the Icicle River earlier that week during the planned search from Sept. 15-19. The river runs right along the campground of the crime scene. He could of threw the key fob into the river for whatever reason at some point likely after the murders. The key fob in the river by the campground was almost a mile from where his remains were found around 2,000 ft elevation further up on the mountain hill.

Ohhh, I did not know that. I do not doubt you in the slightest but it would be interesting to see a link if anyone has one handy. That the key fob was found on a different day and a distance away from the remains is probably a detail that was here and was missed by me.

What I find seems slightly unclear. I see things like 'not long after', or 'at one point' (fob) / 'following this evidence discovery' (remains).

Maybe the Icicle doesn't even run by below the location of the remains despite the picture my mind painted!

The red pin is the campground where the girls and his truck were located.The blue east-west line directly below the campground is Icicle Creek, but we don't have information about where along the creek the key fob was found. The gray east-west line that runs roughly parallel to Icicle Creek is the road. Leavenworth is to the east (right), following that road.

Thank you so much!! And here I sit in Chelan County, where I've been for more of my life than not! I had not heard of Rock Island Campground or Grindstone Mountain prior to this case. So it was the green shirt that did it and not the fob.
