NOT GUILTY WA - Parents try to kidnap daughter over forced marriage - November 3, 2024 (NG of attempted murder; Guilty of lesser charges)

  • #101
In watching the video of Mr. Ali at the scene it is so obvious his feeling that both Mrs. Ali and Haneen are to do exactly as he says and he seems very extreme in the view that men own women in his country. I assume the other daughters must have found partners that meet his standards or they would be victims too. Boy like to hear what really goes on in that home. He just seems dangerous.
Do you happen to know where I could watch the video? Thanks. It must make his blood boil that so many women are working to bring justice for Fatima--the judge, 2 prosecutors, cops, nurses, doctors, student witnesses...

It was shown today by Court TV in one of the breaks this morning. I am doing other things and can't pin point it but it showed him yelling at them from the car and he seems incredulous that the officer was not going to get her over them based on his command. Wife is brainwashed and very afraid of him and if they are even on the street again she better hide and then there is Haneen...where does this leave her?

Lawyer's explanation regarding allowing video evidence of Fatima's mother after the choking. Very cogent argument from the prosecutor as to why it should be allowed (judge changed ruling in agreement as a result).

LIVE: Defying Tradition Parents v. Daughter Attempted Murder Trial - WA v. Ali - Day 5 - PART 2

7/21/25 - Evidence/video played outside the presence of the jury where Mrs. Ali is visibly upset (audio only here) when her husband is being arrested. Begins at about 37-minute mark.

Observation -- watching Mrs. Ali while this video was being played in court, this is the first time I've noticed her shed tears. No tears observed when Fatima was testifying. JMO

Just as I can't conceive of arranged marriage, you apparently can't understand the notion of chemistry and attraction (based on what you wrote). It's fine if you don't understand, but please resist calling it "some kind of magical attraction" as if it's not real. It's the same as when we gravitate toward one person over another for friendship, just in the romantic realm. Frankly, there are many aspects of "arranged" and "forced" marriage that westerners find offensive, especially for women, but I'm refraining from making those arguments as not to offend those who believe in it. Thanks.
I am both female and western, and in a love marriage. I have seen many arranged marriages between consenting adult partners work just as well as western marriages.
Part of my job is helping forced marriage victims escape their situation. I find forced marriage offensive in any context.

Now the defense attorney is complaining about this trial being called "attempted honor killing" in the media. So, the defense won't be happy until we live in a hermetically sealed society without exposure to the outside world. Why are they concerned when it's an apt description?!? Change what the Ali's tried to do, and then the label will change.

IMO, they are hoping to avoid a mistrial!

To be clear, the Court earlier ruled there could be no reference to the allegation by the victim that her father threatened her with an 'honor killing' if she did not travel with her mother and brothers to Iraq, and this info was not admissible in this trial.

We recently saw the jurors individually called before the Court and questioned if they'd seen any MSM and/or social media related to the trial -- most likely concerned about Court TV, serving as the camera pooling partner for the trial, that continues to headline the trial coverage videos as "Attempted Honor Killing" Trial.

The Judge also reprimanded Court TV for not redacting the names of minors during the live stream, including the victim and her boyfriend. This is a requirement pursuant to WA State Statute. It's in the best interest of justice to protect the defendants' rights to a fair trial, and also protect the conviction. It's that simple.

Thanks, Seattle. Great points.

See see they are doing instructions this morning. Has the defense put on a case? I guess I'm lost as to where they are.

From what I understand, the judge laid out coming days after both sides rested. Today would be the jury's instructions part. I didn't know the attorneys debate what's in that, but apparently they do (jury not present). Then 1 day for closing arguments. Then 1 day for jury instructions before they're dismissed to deliberate. I believe she talked about Monday being closing arguments, but don't quote me on that!

thanks I found where both mother and father elected not to testify. got to wonder what Mr Ali does for income in US given his very very limited command of English? So defense with that rested. No case.

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that. Not verified, but someone said he was a forklift driver for Target warehouse. Apparently, the Alis have extended family in Canada, I wonder if they're assisting financially.

It can't look good when there are no defense witnesses! Not a character witness or anything?

DAILY TRIAL HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 7 – 7/23/25

  • VIDEO: WA v. Ihsan & Zahrra Ali, Day 7 | Attempted ‘Honor Killing’ Trial
  • Prosecutors concluded their presentation of evidence on Thursday. They called 27 witnesses during seven days of testimony.
  • Both Ihsan Ali and Zahraa Ali chose not to testify in their second-degree attempted murder cases.
  • Erik Kaeding, defense attorney for Ihsan Ali, concluded his presentation of evidence on Thursday. Kaeding called one witness to testify out of order during the state’s presentation of evidence.
  • Tim Leary, who represents Zahraa Ali, chose not to present any evidence or witnesses, and rest on Thursday.
  • A directed verdict motion for Ihsan Ali was denied. His attorney asked that the charges of first-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment be dropped because there was no evidence to show that Ihsan Ali intentionally tried to hold his daughter captive or cause permanent harm.
  • Jurors watch surveillance video of the moment Zahraa Ali entered the premises of Timberline High School after receiving a letter of “no-trespass” from the Assistant Principal of the school almost two weeks prior.
  • Surveillance video shown to the jury of “Fatima” and “Isiah” running to the school front office, and “Fatima’s” mother walking, then jogging close behind them.
  • A contractor at the school said that Zahraa Ali entered the front door of the high school yelling, “My daughter, my daughter. Where is my daughter?” Zahraa Ali was asked to leave and yelled the same statement through the double glass doors again.
  • “Noah,” a student at Timberline High School, told jurors that Zahraa Ali and her eldest daughter, Haneen, arrived at the school after Ihsan Ali was on the ground and students were trying to detain him. Once Fatima was free, “It appeared [Zahraa] had her arms around Fatima’s body, Noah said.
  • Officer Tori Chavez was recalled by the state to show body camera video recording during interaction with Zahraa Ali. Prosecutors sought to demonstrate that Zahraa Ali spoke English and implied that “Isiah” was the perpetrator in the incident.
  • On cross-examination, Officer Chavez was asked why she did not include Zahraa Ali’s statements in her supplemental report. Chavez said she was not the lead investigator on the case.
  • A school contractor became emotional when describing Fatima as she ran back into the school seeking help. She described Fatima as thin and frail and looked “really afraid.”
  • “Fatima” told school officials that her father “tried to kill me,” and he was “choking her.”
  • Closing arguments begin on Monday, July 28.

DAY 8 – 7/24/25

ETA: Day 7 recap above makes reference to "Thursday" but this should be Wednesday. I believe this is an error by the author.

Today, Thursday, the Court is engaged in Juror Instructions and a "Charge Conference." The jurors are not present.

obviously just a casual observer but have seen enough trials to know when the defendant should take the stand and this one was a tough call. Mr. is a loose cannon that could go off at any time but sort of wonder if Mrs.. through translator could. tell their side of the story...provide some background or something. The way it ended should leave little doubt for the jury. I know many of those jurors have seen the Court TV headers and bet that phrase comes up in deliberations.

If "honor killing" comes up during deliberations, there will be an immediate mistrial!

The jurors were individually questioned a couple of days ago as reassurance for the Court and the parties-- given this topic and the alleged threat by the defendant, was excluded as evidence from this trial.

If all that yelling and hollering in front of Police by Mr A is an indication of his typical behaviour, I hope the jury can extrapolate and figure that behind closed doors it's a whole other story.

F's safety is not guaranteed regardless of outcome of this case and I hope she can get the support and protection she deserves.

I agree, Mr. would likely show his volatility and Mrs. would be not be able to withstand the prosecution's questioning. She would quickly be exposed.

ACTUALLY....

The parents are not on trial of kidnapping! The title of this thread is misleading.

They're accused of attempted murder.

Not true, charges for each include two counts of attempted kidnapping!

OP may want to listen to today's "charging conference" for a better understanding of what exactly the jurors will be deciding:

"ZAHRAA SUBHI MOHSIN ALI"

VIOLATION OF A PROTECTION ORDER DOMESTIC
ASSAULT 2ND DEGREE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
BURGLARY 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED MURDER 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING 1ST DEGREE
