GUILTY WA - Santiago Two Hearts, 1, beaten to death, Hillyard, 28 Sept 2010

Heads up this is gonna be a RANT!

Is the sister that introduced these two the same one he attacked, the same one who was given a lie detector test in the case of the other baby? Why would you introduce your abusive brother to a woman with kids?

Is this entire family nuts? I love my children but if my son abused a baby in my home id be in jail for abuse on him. Why would his mother not warn the new girlfriend? I dont get it at all.

If he was assumed to be the one that shook the other baby wouldnt LE be watching him closely and know he was living in a home with 2 small children? I understand they couldnt go up to the mother and say hey we are watching this guy. Why not an anonymous phone call saying get your kids away from this guy.

CPS had to be involved and if mom is out selling plasma chances are shes on state aid why no call from them?

The mother of the shaken baby said she warned people about him. Why wouldnt she talk to the new GF????

So many people could have prevented this!!! This has my blood BOILING!!!

END OF RANT...Wish I could say it made me feel better. Of course this is all just MOO

Rant on.

To hopefully clarify or add to your points.

Yes, the sister he attacked (charges eventually dropped, but no idea why) lived in the same house with him and their mother, and the woman who was the mother of the baby he shook. Presumably same sister that Rebecca stated on camera was the one who introduced them. That introduction though, would have been prior to the baby shaking. Whether or nor she told Rebecca, we only have one side of that, but sister threw her brother under the train right quick the day after this story came out, so who knows if that family told her anything or not.

Meantime his WA court records are accessible as fast as you can update a MySpace page. No secret he was a bad boy. Those are the crowds she ran with.

LE may have been keeping one eye on him after he failed lie detector test, but you had a house of 4 adults. Mom (Cooley) and her husband (Pa Cooley) had equally ugly past with the law, sister and the live-in GF might have as well. Which might explain why no arrest if they had no more than a lie detector test to go on. One would HOPE that the other 3 women in that house would have pointed fingers right at him, but lacking physical evidence, I'm sure they walked away frustrated.

That child was removed from that mother's care, so whoever she is, I'm inclined to think as messed up as all the rest of these convoluted "family" members.

CPS had had him on their radar as well, but won't say WHICH of the at least THREE cases where he has been in a home where a child has been injured or killed that involves. Privacy issues, blah blah.

But he was given joint custody of these children? Judge needs to 'splain that one.

have not seen a whole lot of cases where DSHS gets it right, but they do try sometimes. Tough when everybody is pointing fingers at everybody else. Had my own highly negative experience with DSHS in WA State trying to protect an adult in a nursing home. They shuffled some papers and yawned and went back to whatever else they were or were not doing. Only did that much after I involved an attorney.

Honestly, yes, I think the entire family is indeed nuts. And gives not much more than a rat's a$$ about kids except to get on welfare. That is MOO until media shows the records. State isn't going to cough those up.

5-1/2 hours to give plasma (uh huh). Had been home 1 hour before 911 was called. Baby deceased at least a couple hours before reaching the hospital. I didn't time from call to EMT to out the door to hospital, but they did not dawdle, despite the fact they knew they had a DOA. And police were in hot pursuit after EMT called back to dispatcher and dispatcher almost lost it. I would have, had I heard something that probably went like "1 yr old patient is nonresponsive and cold and blue, with evidence of extensive bruising" or something to that effect.

To be clear, there was a lot of "traffic" in the 4-6pm window, and many calls from central to LE and/or EMT were covered, so I did not hear precisely what caused reaction from the dispatcher after the initial call for EMT. But there were several with LE following that, and they were very concerned about who was driving to the hospital with with the "other" one and following the ambulance. Why precisely worried, dunno. But not happy about it and concerned on precise whereabouts.

Shame they couldn't lock him up for either of the TWO previous incidents, and that he was running around on felony probation until he killed one.

LE did jump all over this as soon as they had a DOA however. Only consolation in that is he should never be able to do this again.

Beyond belief that so many adults seemingly cared so little until one died. Yes indeed, one person COULD have prevented this. But we only have one person's word that somebody didn't try. Sometimes people just don't want to listen (been there, done that, but no kids involved). "But he seemed like the perfect guy...". Her older son is currently living with his bio father (draw your own conclusions) or at least was as of yesterday.

DSHS ain't off my hook by any means. Hopefully they will HAVE to answer questions and cough up records in court.

Wasn't sure I was allowed to post, but thanks. Indications there of "possible" links to local gangs as well.

New story about the first baby he hurt. My bad that I initially posted that was a baby girl, or maybe the media initially had it wrong. It was a boy. There were 4 adults in that home (his mother's) when that incident happened. I have trouble wrapping my head around the idea that Cooley's sister, who was also apparently in the home at the time, would then not say ANYTHING to this current GF, who he had already been living with for almost 2 months.

From the GF's own mouth in her interviews, it was Cooley's sister who introduced them.
Somebody either got that not quite right, or somebody knew way more about mr perfect than she wished to admit, or the sister is one malicious creature herself. Any way you slice it, some messed up families.

according to this article it was a friend that introduced them.

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2010/sep/29/1-year-old-boy-dies-north-side-apartment/

McCollough and Cooley were introduced through friends and had been seeing each other for about six months. Cooley is not employed, Gilbert said.

No idea if she considered her a friend, but she stated on camera it was his sister. Straight from her mouth, not her sister's (Gilbert), who did most of the talking to the Spokesman.

Interview -- very long so broken into 2 parts -- in one of first links in this thread. About 2:40 into 9:57 video.

New story on more charges for Cooley. This one for the 6-month-old he shook back in May. Explains a little more why they couldn't file charges against him back then. Partly because there was an 18-hr delay between injuries happening and when they were reported to police.

Going off of memory on this so I f I mess up please have patience with me.

Why was this SOB still walking the streets. Hes 22 yrs old and has already abused 5 children...That is a tragedy!

This mother wants her child back because shes a ""GOOD MOM"" if shes such a good mom why would she need to be drug tested in the first place?

All the people in this senario are criminals in some way or form. Why are these children being placed in these homes. CPS is definatley not protecting them or working in thier best intrests. Sounds to me like they are just taking the easy way out. Thats what licenced foster care homes are for...USE THEM!!!

Sad thing is all these people are getting slapped on the hand for thier crimes.JMHO

And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, that same ex girlfriend with the 2 kids she abused and who had restraining order against him...turns out she claims he's REALLY all hugs and kisses nice.

All I can say is WOW, just WOW!

Oh yes, she's seen the inside of a few court rooms herself, has KMB. Yup, files for protection in January, he books to go abuse more children 300 miles away, and by October is a great guy. Maybe when when she comes down off whatever high she is on, he'll be an a-hole once again. Jeepers.

Spokesman kicks out another story covering abuse on both sides of the state, but primarily the 6-month-old he shook in May.

If I'm following the logic, CPS cleared him on the May 2010 deal, but could also be in Kitsap the way this was written. Wrong last name on Santiago as well. Dada is Two Hearts. McCreight the father of the older son.

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2010/oct/05/suspect-babys-beating-death-faces-more-charges/

as per article^^^Cooley wrote a letter of apology to that baby’s mother, April Fagan, during the interrogation, saying, “I’m so sorry for what happened. i didn’t think it would hurt him that bad,” according to the affidavit.

Cooley told police Sept. 29 that he’d shaken the baby twice - the first time about three days before the boy, identified in documents by initials A.G., was hospitalized. Cooley said the baby stopped crying each time, but he knew the child was injured the first time “when A.G. woke up from his nap with vomit on his face,” according to the affidavit.

“When asked why he did this, Cooley stated, ‘I was mad. I’ve been mad for months,’” the affidavit said.

The boy’s mother told police Cooley was an old high school friend who’d been staying with her at 2708 W. 14th Ave. Two other adults, including Cooley’s sister, lived there, as well as other children, police said.

Fagan told police in May that her son had fallen from a couch, but physicians said his injuries were caused by abuse.

Fagan said Cooley was a likely suspect and that he’d yelled at the boy to stop crying and shut up.

Cooley’s sister, Daisha Fry, told police Cooley was attending to the baby in his bassinet when the child stopped crying suddenly. Fry told police that wasn’t normal.

“Daisha stated that Cooley does have a temper and has had problems with his own children, who now live on the coast,” according to the affidavit. “Daisha stated CPS had been involved with Cooley in the past, but Cooley had been cleared by them.”

Spokane police confirmed with Child Protective Services that Cooley had been exonerated.

Cooley had initially denied hurting the child, and a child assault specialist told police she couldn’t determine when the injuries were inflicted.

Each witness was interviewed multiple times.

Someone dropped the ball on this one...is a letter really enough???

“After each interview, there were no admissions of guilt or other evidence to eliminate the other adults in the the home,” according to the affidavit. “The case involving A.G. was left open and your affiant made numerous attempts to contact Cooley through family members. Cooley never responded and family members stated they did not know where he was staying.”

how hard did they look for him????

Maybe I should start getting high? Id have a reason to break the law

Cooley told police he was upset with the boy’s crying and his own lack of marijuana, according to court documents.

From August 2012:

http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2012/aug/20/spokane-child-killer-gets-36-years-prison/

A Spokane man who pleaded guilty to killing a 1-year-old and beating another infant until he was blind and brain damaged was sentenced today to more than 36 years in prison...

Deputy Spokane County Prosecutor Patrick Johnson said Cooley was dating a woman in May 2010 who had a 5-month-old son... “He beat that child blind. While he was under investigation for that beating, he finds a new girlfriend with a 4- and 1-year-old,” Johnson said. “He’s alone with them and the baby starts crying and he punched the 1-year-old to death.”

Spokane Police interviewed the 4-year-old and the boy was able to describe how Cooley beat his little brother to death, Johnson said. The four-year-old also suffered a split lip during the deadly assault on his brother.
