Search continues for missing man last seen in Lynnwood | HeraldNet.com

[...]

West, 29, was last seen near Highway 99 and 220th Street Southwest. He was wearing a green hoodie, black windbreaker and a mask with an American flag pattern on it. He’s described as being 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a slight build and having light brown hair and bluish gray eyes.

Earlier that day he signed out of the group home he moved into just before the coronavirus pandemic struck the United States. He likes to walk and wander, and West wanted to paint his face like a clown and was looking for makeup at a nearby Halloween store, Crane said. He came back but signed out for the store again around 6:15 p.m.

[...]

He has schizophrenia, a mental disorder that produces delusions, disordered thinking, hallucinations and behavior that impairs daily functioning, according to the Mayo Clinic. ...

“Right now, he’s not acting right,” Crane said. “He could be talking to himself, laughing really loud, or behavior that people could find really scary. But he’s not at all dangerous.”

But his family thinks West hasn’t been medicated since Oct. 16, which would be the longest he’s gone without prescription treatment since he was 17.

[...]

Since he’s been gone, Crane has received about 20 tips from people who think they saw him.

People have told her they saw West as far away as Portland, but the majority of reported sightings are between Everett and Seattle, Crane said. Despite the tips, none have produced a photo or video, even when her daughters and her rush to a location, including Alderwood mall in Lynnwood and the Fred Meyer in Everett.

[...]

Tips about his location can be sent to the Edmonds Police Department 425-771-0200 (case number 20-243-55), his mom, Carol Crane, at 425-512-5437 and on a Facebook page, Missing Sawyer West.

Missing Sawyer West
Video footage found of Sawyer training for half marathon

ETA If he went missing while on a run this could explain why his personal items/phone were left home IMO

Missing Sawyer West
Update: we are working with the police to find more video footage of Sawyers run on the 16th to better track his route and timeline. We are focusing on College Place Middle School and the trail around the Lynnwood Golf Course and surrounding areas. He also spoke of a wooded area he liked to meditate in. If your in the area please check every patch of trees and bushes, even in yards, that you see and if you have cameras in the area please review them for Oct 16th between 6pm-8pm. He was wearing a green hoodie sweatshirt, blue sweat pants, and black tennis shoes. Thank you for your continued prayers and help with our search.

College Place has a track that gets pretty busy during the day/ early evening with walkers/joggers. There are some wooded areas immediately around the school and track, also a golf course. But the surrounding area is busy with both residential homes and businesses. I hope they can track him by cameras.

I hope and think that Sawyer is still alive and more or less well. Having said that, I do have to point out that Snohomish county has a history of bizarre and troublesome violent crimes.

This breaks my heart so much. I’m so worried for him. This is a long time to be without meds.

How does an adult with mental illness end up in a care home? Are they placed there by someone with a POA? Is it court ordered?

Missing Sawyer West
Update: 11/16/2020
  • The search has extended into Seattle and they are overwhelmed with the number of shelters, food banks, and other homeless outreach programs.
  • If you have time to call, email, or drop in and share Sawyers missing person flyer that would be so helpful. (From Shoreline to Downtown Seattle)
  • They have a script available that they've been using if you need it.
  • Email for the script and flyers at the link.

I am not in Washington, im in Louisiana, but this is what I used to do for a living. All of mine were voluntary, but most were post hospitalization. So, they would be in the hospital due to needing med stabilization and when they were discharged, some were referred for community services. Louisiana has no funding for mental health homes now (only homes for those diagnosed with a developmental disability), but when we did, they were admitted for 1 year. In that 1 year, I had to basically help then form good habits, so thy could then be more successful and independent. Every now and then, it is court ordered, but that was rare. They wanted to come and I chose people I felt I could help best. Hopefully, they have better funding than we did. It was a tiny bit of time to help, but it was better than no options, like now.

I worked in a psychiatric hospital and we had a whole “ward” where people just lived permanently. They were adults and their families couldn’t care for them. Many had been in the mental health system since they were kids. Some had adult onset psychosis. Dunno how it works in the US but mental health care is free here and basically, after a number of appointments, a psychiatrist will refer you if you can’t care for yourself because of your mental health. OR If you’re a danger to yourself or others, you’ll go into inpatient where it’s a hospital setting and they’ll treat and evaluate you. Most will get released back into the wild. But a very small few may have to go into long term care.
Some were on the autism spectrum, some schizophrenic, some had dementia (but weren’t elderly), some I have no idea but they were a fun as hell wild bunch who were a real hoot whenever we busted out the piano for singalongs!

There was a body found this morning close to where Sawyer went missing. The gender and age haven’t been released and the death is “suspicious”. I’m not sure how to link an article but it’s all over the news. The body was found behind a building close to Edmonds Community College. I hope it’s not Sawyer but thoughts to the deceased’s family.
