Lugar Co-Sponsors Dru’s Law

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar is a co-sponsor of the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Database Act of 2005, or Dru’s Law, which was introduced today by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND). This bill would create a national sex offender database that would be accessible to the public via the Internet. It would also require states to monitor “high-risk” offenders who are released after serving their full sentence.

“Any crime is disturbing, but those that victimize our nation’s children are particularly reprehensible.” Lugar said. “I believe that children are our most precious resource, deserving of the protections we, as caring adults, are committed to afford them.”

Dru’s Law also would require state prisons to notify states attorneys whenever “high-risk” offenders are about to be released. This would allow the states attorneys to consider petitioning the courts for continued confinement of the offender.

A recent study found that 72 percent of “high-risk” sex offenders commit another crime within six years of being released.

Dru’s Law is named after Dru Sjodin, who was abducted and murdered in Grand Forks, North Dakota in November 2003. Her alleged assailant, Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr., had been released from prison only six months before the abduction, having served time for rape in Minnesota.

Lugar co-sponsored similar legislation that was passed by the Senate in the 108th Congress.
