College professor, 46, is brutally stabbed to death by a stranger while trying to protect his girlfriend from being attacked

"A college professor has died after he stepped in to save his girlfriend from a random attacker and was stabbed multiple times in the neck.

Police said the couple were walking home after watching a Seattle Sounders soccer match when they were attacked for no apparent reason.

Troy Wolff, 46, and his girlfriend, Kristen Ito, 30, were confronted by a man who pulled out a small knife and began stabbing Miss Ito repeatedly in the torso on Friday night."

All of these reports about unprovoked attacks on innocent people lately is quite unnerving.

It shows none of us are safe anywhere we are anymore and out of the blue it could happen to any one of us too.

June 2015:

A man charged in the random stabbing of two people in Pioneer Square in September 2013 has been found to be not competent to stand trial, it was announced Thursday.

The King County prosecutor’s office said charges of murder and attempted murder were dismissed Thursday afternoon against the defendant, Donnell D. Jackson...

“The defendant’s current mental condition prevents us from moving forward with a criminal prosecution at this time,” he said, “but there is no statute of limitations on murder charges, and we will pursue the charges if and when his legal competency is restored.

Mentally ill suspect re-charged in deadly 2013 stabbing of professor

Jackson's charges were dismissed in 2015 after a Western State Hospital examination found him to suffer ongoing schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms. Caregivers had spent nearly a year trying to restore his competency, according to a court memo. He was deemed unable to understand the charges and the court procedures he faced, according to the report. The charges were cleared with the understanding that they could be filed again should he be declared fit for trial.

Western State Hospital sent the King County Prosecutor's office a letter in November indicating their intent to send Jackson to a less-restrictive facility soon, reporting that "his mental condition has stabilized significantly," according to court records.
