WA - Unidentified Male: "Lyle Stevik", Grays Harbor, 17 Sept 2001 - #4

I always thought of Lyle as possbily having Mediterranean background. There's three continents that surround the Mediterranean Sea, and several countries from Europe (Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey), Asia (Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt), and Africa (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco)

I was able to locate a missing persons website from Croatia http://www.nestali.hr/default.aspx?id=16. The website is in Croatian so I had to use Google translator https://translate.google.com/. There are a few men on the Croatian site who reminded my of "Lyle Stevik" (and several others who reminded me of another suicide by hanging at the El Rancho Hotel in Las Vegas, NV). In Lyle's case, there are two possible problems (1) how did the missing person get from Croatia to Washington state and (2) his body has been modified in a way most ethnic Croatian men are not.

There were and are many Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian immigrants in the US and Canada who fled the fighting when the former Yugoslavia fell apart, or left afterwards.

Sounded good until reading that mp has a "Medusa" tattoo, which LS does not, unless it was removed. But now we have someone else to keep eyes open for, thanks!

Nice find! I think this will be similar to Lyle's story too. I think the date is right for this one; but you can submit it to be sure

Charley Project Medical Conditions: Algul was severely depressed in December 2001; he developed the depression after his mother was killed in an automobile accident and was prescribed medication to control the condition. He stopped taking his medication two weeks prior to his disappearance.

Algul departed from The Garden Of Eden, the gourmet farmers' market he managed, in the New York City borough of Brooklyn at approximately 8:30 p.m. on December 27, 2001. The business is located in the 100 block of Montague Street. Algul's loved ones say he was in a "trance-like state" when he left.

Algul boarded the number 2 subway train in the neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights shortly afterwards. A co-worker saw him on the train and tried to speak to him, but Algul did not repond. He unexpectedly exited two stops later at the Wall Street station in the borough of Manhattan. Algul has never been heard from again.

Algul's family believes he may have been picked up by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and detained as a suspected terrorist after his disappearance. During the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, many Muslim men and men of Middle Eastern descent were detained. The FBI denies having him in custody, however. Algul's loved ones also hypothesize that he could have had a nervous breakdown, but they do not believe he committed suicide. There is no evidence to support any theory.

New Jersey authorities are handling Algul's investigation. His case remains unsolved.

The picture of this person, Ilija Dukic, almost made me jump out of my seat, as it is to me such an uncanny likeness to Lyle.

The only difference I can see is that he's younger in this picture!

To me, as an artist, when I compare his jawline, it is an exact match,
height of cheekbones, exact match,
shape of lips, exact match,
shape of nose, exact match,
shape of eyebrows, exact match,
even the angle of his ears (from what's visible) is identical.

Personally, I think you've found him.

It's definitely worth following up.

I just noticed that the names are similar too, in that Stevik and Dukic both end with the same sound, and when anglicized, have often been spelled interchangeably. Perhaps no coincidence?

I had to look back myself.

He was mentioned in post 1164 and 1165.

1165 had a photo of him and translated info.

Lyle's case does remind me of the man found hanging in Las Vegas in 1997. There should be more than enough to identify them, but something vital is missing.

I think that when you have a case where a UID is not a street person or transient, there is a good chance that they are from out of country somewhere.

Also, it occurred to me that the name Elijah/ Ilija and Lyle also sound very similar and, as the abbreviated version of Elijah is 'Eli', then Lyle is not a long step away from this name.
This using of an alias that sounds similar to the actual original name is something which people using an alias would be likely to do in order to not rouse suspicion when people call them by an assumed name that they haven't connected as their own and they don't respond, for example a man named Fred using the alias Richard and not responding when called out to.

I thought about the background of Ilija Dukic and if he really was Lyle Stevic then it makes sense, in regards to the circumstances of that historical time frame, as to what would have driven him to suicide.
He had previously been a part of and a witness to an extremely brutal and gruesome war between 'Muslims' and 'Christians' in his home country. (Inverted commas used because their actual true religious beliefs are likely, in reality, to be neither.)

If he had managed to somehow escape that war and make his way to the US then it was as an illegal immigrant.

Within a week of 9/11 attacks it was clearly shown that this was an attack by Muslims against the 'Judeo-Christian' west, thus summoning the notion that perhaps the same type of war as he had previously witnessed was about to begin again, but this time on the North American continent, his adopted 'peaceful' safe haven, which would be a a torturous idea to anyone who had seen the vile atrocities carried out in the Bosnian conflict.
Also, the 9/11 attacks, to any forward thinking individual, were obviously going to bring about far more stringent administrative security measures in regard to passports and identity examinations, something that this man may have realised and had foreseen would lead to him being uncovered as an illegal alien and either imprisoned or sent back to his home country which, for reasons known only to himself, was something that he did not, or could not do.
Either way, dying by his own hand was a preferable alternative and having witnessed death on a grand scale during that particularly gruesome war as a soldier, death was something that he had become accustomed to, which is why he went about the task of suicide in such a considered and 'mechanical' way.

If he was an illegal immigrant then he may have not have possessed any identification or he knew that the identification he had would not stand up to close inspection, so it had been disposed of, which would explain why he had no identification.

The note stating 'For the room' may have been talking not only about the room in which he'd stayed in but also about 'the room in your country'.

Shape of chin, spacing between eyebrows, shape of both left and right eyebrows, shape and length of jaw, situation of cheek bones, shape of lips, shape of the bulb of the nose, shape of nose bridge, length of nose. Shape of eyes. There is nothing that suggests this isn't the same person.
