55-year-old William “Bill” Sutton was killed in Skamania County and the public is being asked for help to solve the case.

The investigation began Oct. 9, 2017. Deputies responded to a report of suspicious circumstances at a camping area north of Stevenson. Deputies said they discovered signs of an assault at the dispersed campsite, but did not find the camper, Sutton.

Sutton had been camping in the area with a group of transients before he moved to a new campsite.

Due to the condition of the camp and evidence found at the scene, detectives said they believe Sutton was the victim of foul play and likely died of homicidal violence.

Sutton’s whereabouts, however, are not known.

Sutton is still missing and investigators hope to speak to anyone who may know more about his disappearance. They want to speak to anyone who was in the Blue Lake Road area on or around the weekend of October 6-9, 2017.

Skamania county has a special place in my heart but the possibility of finding a body in that terrain is beyond my comprehension. Every inch of land that isn’t paved over or otherwise tamed by human intervention is swallowed by blackberry brambles and 5 foot tall ferns or washed out by the rain to the Columbia and its tributaries. I hope William’s body is found someday soon but knowing the rugged density of the temperate rainforest here, that is unlikely. RIP.
