A child with ‘sweet style, kind spirit’
NIKI SULLIVAN; The News Tribune
Mikhail Linnikâ??s last memory of his daughter is of Zina being taken away in a gray van. At her funeral on Sunday, he described what he considers Zinaâ??s farewell: Over the past few months, heâ??d occasionally catch her silently observing the family, taking in the sights and sounds of the 10-member household. â??It was like a sign of her seeing us for the last time,â?? he said through a translator, struggling with his tears.

When did suspect come here?
SEAN ROBINSON; The News Tribune
Terapon Adhahn, prime suspect in the abduction and slaying of 12-year-old Zina Linnik, settled in Pierce County no earlier than December 1989, according to available public records. Wash. case brings review of missing kids
BY GENE JOHNSON
Authorities are looking into whether a Thai immigrant whose tip they say led them to the body of a 12-year-old girl could have ties to other missing child cases dating back to 1986. Terapon Adhahn, 42, told his lawyer where police could find the body of Zina Linnik, who was abducted outside her family's home during a neighborhood fireworks display July 4. Adhahn is expected to be charged in Linnik's death, Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell said Friday. Adhahn has been cooperating with detectives but has yet to provide a complete statement, Ramsdell said. Court documents said he initially denied involvement.

The last nine days and the search for Zina
THE NEWS TRIBUNE
Wednesday, July 4:  â?¢Â Terapon Adhahn, 42, has dinner with friends in Parkland. They later tell police he left about 9 p.m.  â?¢Â About 9:45 p.m., Zina Linnik, 12, is in the alley behind her house on South J Street in Tacoma, watching fireworks. Her friends walk off to check something, leaving the girl behind. The family hears a scream. Zinaâ??s father runs out into the alley and sees a gray van speed off. He finds a flip-flop sandal on the pavement, the same type his daughter was wearing. Thursday, July 5: After ruling out an early suspect in the case, Tacoma police issue an Amber Alert about 10:30 a.m. and canvass the Hilltop neighborhood with bloodhounds and German shepherds. FBI agents join the search.

A young girl’s death– and a troubling question
THE NEWS TRIBUNE
The news that Zina Linnik had been found dead eight days after she was abducted was hard to take. The Linnik familyâ??s grief is its own, but they should know that the entire South Sound community shares their loss and prays they will find some comfort. Children should be able to play outside without fear of being abducted and killed. When it happens here â?? to girls like Adreâ??anna Jackson in 2005, Jennifer Bastian and Michella Welch in 1986, and now Zina â?? it is a heart-numbing blow. There is some solace in knowing that Tacoma police are confident that they have Zinaâ??s killer, a Parkland man with a sex offense conviction who reportedly provided information that led to her body. If they are right, and justice is served, he will never be able to hurt another child.

Unsolved 2000 sex attacks back on minds of officers
SEAN ROBINSON; The News Tribune
Investigators are looking hard at an unsolved series of sexual assaults in 2000, seeking possible links to Terapon Adhahn, the prime suspect in the abduction and slaying of Zina Linnik. Publicly, law enforcement leaders say they are checking numerous cases locally and nationally for such links. However, the seven-year-old assaults here, which include DNA evidence, are receiving some of the closest scrutiny, federal and local law enforcement officials said Friday. In 2000, the case led Tacoma police to release a composite sketch and announce a hunt for a serial rapist who was never caught. Pierce County prosecutors later took the unusual step of filing kidnapping and rape charges against a man identified only by his DNA profile.

Police: Missing Wash. girl's body found
BY GENE JOHNSON
A Thai immigrant convicted of incest led investigators to the body of a 12-year-old girl who had been missing since the Fourth of July, and is expected to be charged in her death, authorities said Friday. Police are also trying to determine whether Terapon Adhahn, 42, is connected to other missing child cases that date back to 1986. Zina Linnik, abducted during a neighborhood fireworks display, died from "homicidal violence," said Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum and the Pierce County medical examiner's office. Her body was found in a rural wooded area after information from Adhahn's lawyer led police and FBI agents there, authorities said.

Police Chief Don Ramsdell and Gomez said investigators would look at Adhahn as a possible suspect in other unsolved cases involving attacks on children, both in the Tacoma area and nationwide. ?We?re looking at cold cases from the past,? Ramsdell said. The chief mentioned the case of Adre?anna Jackson specifically. The 10-year-old Tillicum girl disappeared in December 2005 on her way to school. Her remains were found months later in an overgrown lot not far from her home.
