What was the second story melds into another first story because of the slope of the land. That's what I think they mean when they say he entered through a second story window... no ladder would have been needed in this case IMO.
The house is a mid-entry, with the daylight basement visible in the front view, with a deck off the living room/kitchen area. I lived in a nearly identical house, which are very so common in this area. The back deck looks to have access to the yard, which is required to access the yard without going downstairs, which may not even have a walkout and could be below grade like the front.
An open window in the police reports means unlocked, not standing wide open. I wouldn't find it odd that someone forgot to lock a window. There are ground-level windows at the front and back of the house. MOO You can look at the backyard too.
