GUILTY Wales - Gerald Corrigan, 74, killed with crossbow bolt, Holyhead, 19 April 2019

I guess if you're going to lie about being in an area close to a murder, a secret sexual fling would be a more reasonable excuse for that lie, LOL.

I'm guessing they did actually have some sort of sexual relationship, or both of them were so desperate for an alibi that they were willing to lie about it... IMO. Maybe they were hanging on to the hope that a jury would believe they wouldn't lie about that.

Thanks as always for the upates Legally - I am playing catch up again today.

I would also hope he is coming across to the Jury as the liar that he seems to be - imo of course.

It would be so interesting to know what image he is presenting. I remember a case on here, few years back now -can't remember which one - but we were all saying how well one particular witness was doing, based on the reported testimony. We actually had a WSer at the trial that day and he/she told us afterwards that the witness was awful on the stand - lots of pauses, gaps, didn't sound plausible at all. The journalist had not mentioned any of this, just quoted the testimony, so it had sounded very smooth to us.

Whall denies purchase of cannabis growing equipment was anything to do with Wyn Lewis.

1h

When Whall was off work last year around April - he said “Emma was covering the bills”. Whall says “at that time all my bills were paid.”

1h

Excalibur crossbow cost £750 “That was a lot of money for someone in your position.” “I still earned £60 an hour. Two hours that’s £120 a day” Whall says.

1h

Gavin Jones knew you were the owner of a crossbow? “As far as I know he didn’t” Whall said.

1h

April 17-19 2019 - you had sole use of the Land Rover Discovery and you used it on those days to go Gof Du and Porthdafarch Beach? “Yes, correct” says Whall.

1h

On June 2 - day before Land Rover arson - in the evening Gavin Jones calls his brother Darren - 9 min call. Then he calls Whall and speaks for about 3 minutes. “What was that call about?” “I can’t remember”, says Whall.

Land Rover telematics the car was still unlocked and at 12.12pm the engine was switched on And driven off and set on fire to about 1 hour 20 minutes later and was parked off Dean Street Bangor for some time, before it was burned by Darren Jones and Roberts.

1h

Whall says his knowledge of Darren Jones was “not much at all really”. He says he saw him about 2012 when he had a centre. He wouldn’t have recognised him again.

1h

Land Rover Discovery 1.35pm June 3, telematics says the car was on fire. Whall and Gavin Jones were leaving a Vodafone shop together and Gavin Jones calls Darren “the arsonist” at 2.47pm.

1h

“Do you now what he was telling his brother?” “He was saying to get his solicitor’s number as far as I know.”

1h

2.56pm a Toyota Corolla drives into Bangor street and “the arsonist comes to join you and Gavin” “ He has come to join Gavin, I just happened to be there” “Coincidence?” “I was with Gavin who was getting a solicitor’s number.”

1h

For only the second time in your life you meet up with the arsonist just after he burned your car. “He was meeting Gavin,” says Whall. “I had no idea my car had been stolen at that time.”

1h

“How did Darren Jones’s DNA get onto one of your keys “The only thing I think is secondary transfer when he shook my hand,” says Whall.

1h

“There is another possible way. He had it and was given it so he could drive away to burn it.” “The only person who could given him the key was you.” “As far as I know the keys were on the wrack.”

1h

The iPhone7, crossbow, bolts and broadheads and Land Rover Discovery were all destroyed because you shot and killed Gerald Corrigan. “That’s incorrect,” says Whall.

49m

Elizabeth Rees is giving evidence for the defence.

48m

Ms Rees is being asked about what she saw April 18/19. She lives in a house close to Gof Du.

44m

Ms Rees says there are windows that overlook Gof Du. And her family owns land near to - and a shed just off the driveway - to Gof Du where Gerald Gorrigan who was shot there and died later.

44m

On night of April 18/19 Ms Rees went upstairs to go to bed. She looked out and saw a light not far from her shed.

42m

That was between 11pm to 12am or maybe a little bit after 12. “It was a car or a vehicle,” she says. “It was very unusual.”

41m

Ms Rees spoke to the police about what she had seen on April 19. Photos were taken from her vantage point.

37m

Ms Rees says it was stationery. The lights did not remain on all the time. The lights were on first, then about a minute or two later the lights went off. A minute later the lights came back on. It drove along the farm lane, onto the main lane and then onto main road.

37m

The vehicle was going away from Gof Du.

Steve Bagnall (@DPWrexNews) | Twitter

34m

Ms Rees said she did not see the vehicle after that. “It looked a small vehicle”.

33m

Cross examination by Peter Rouch.

32m

“It was a short time between the lights going on and off - cloud it have been turning around?” “No” says Ms Rees.

29m

“The whole thing took three or four minutes” “Yes”. And she thought it turned right onto the main road back towards Blackthorn Caravan site. No re-examination. Ms Rees evidence is finished.

14m

I’ll be covering the crossbow murder of Gerald Corrigan trial today at Mold Crown Court today.

14m

Justice Nerys Jefford is giving the jury legal directions. The evidence in the trial concluded yesterday.

9m

Justice Jefford said the jury don’t have to come to a decision on every point, but must come to verdicts based on the whole of the evidence. “It’s your judgement alone, not mine that counts,” she says.

8m

The prosecution has to make the jury sure of a verdict. If they are not sure or the crime, or believe it has not been committed then the verdict must be not guilty.

6m

This is a case where the evidence is “circumstantial” Justice Jefford says. “It can be powerful evidence, but must be approached with care” The jury must draw inferences and conclusions from the evidence, but the jury must be careful and must be sure about them.

2m

If you are not sure it was Whall who fired the crossbow bolt - he must be found not guilty. But if you are sure he fired the bolt then he is guilty. It is not necessary for the prosecution to demonstrate a motive, says Justice Jefford.

1m

Justice Jefford says the defence will say doubt is cast on whether Whall killed Mr Corrigan because there is no motive. But the jury can still find him guilty if they are sure he fired the crossbow.

·
33m

Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, by setting fire to a Land Rover Discovery. The charges - which are against Whall and Gavin Jones - must be considered separately and different conclusions may be reached for the two of them.

31m

Sometimes there is direct evidence of a conspiracy - sometimes there is no direct evidence eg obvious messages. Justice Jefford says this case is the later - and inferences will have to be drawn to reach a verdict of guilty.

29m

Jury doesn’t have to be sure there was a conspiracy involving all four who were charged in connection with the Land Rover, Martin Roberts and Darren Jones have pleaded guilty to arson - they only have to be sure they were involved with one other for it to be guilty to conspiracy

28m

What matters is whether they were party to the burning of the Land Rover and it was to pervert the course of justice, to be guilty of that charge.

25m

Conspiracy to commit arson is an alternative to perverting the course of justice. That is, if the jury believed they conspired to burn the Land Rover, but are unsure whether it was to pervert the course of justice.

23m

If they are not sure that Terence Whall shot Gerald Corrigan on April 19 2019 - then he is not guilty of murder. If they are sure, then he is guilty of murder.

21m

Darren Jones and Martin Roberts have pleaded guilty to arson of the Land Rover, but that is not evidence against Whall or Gavin Jones.

18m

Justice Jefford said prosecution say there is a link between murder of Gerald Corrigan and burning of Land Rover to hide evidence.

17m

“What the evidence demonstrates and what you make if it, is a matter for you,” the jury is told.

8m

At first Whall lied about where he was on April 17/18. Because he lied does not mean he is guilty, His explanation is that he was hiding his sexual relationship with Barry Williams and it is up to the jury whether they believe that.

5m

Gavin Jones did not give evidence. The jury must not conclude because he did not give evidence - he is guilty. It is still for the prosecution to prove he is guilty.

Peter Rouch closing speech for prosecution. To shoot a powerful crossbow at a person can only mean wound thing, A broadhead is used to cause catastrophic damage.

4m

However loaded the crossbow with that broad head knew precisiely what they wanted to do to kill Mr Corrigan in the most brutal way possible.

3m

Someone wanted Gerald Corrigan killed. “Why he was shot we may never know.” The prosecution does not have to prove motive.

3m

Sometimes the motive is obvious or sometimes its obscured and deeply hidden and never comes to th surface. Sometimes its for money and money has featured in this case.

2m

Marie Bailey and Gerald Corrigan had given upwards of £250,000 to Wyn Lewis. He was introduced into the case by Ms Bailey and the fraud at that time. There is association between Whall and Mr Lewis.

2m

In the week leading up to May 31 when Gavin Jones wasn’t in the area Whall was going to Mr Lewis home sometimes “at the dead of night” sneaking around and putting a tracker on a car driven by Wyn Lewis - keeping a track on his movements.

1m

The suggestion that he was putting a tracker on because it belonged to Geraint Williams and it was feared it would be taken to Ireland “is absurd”.

·
9m

There is no complaint by Mr Williams relating to that car. ‘Putting a tracker on someone’s vehicle in the dead of night is fairly extreme behaviour” and on May 31 there was an incident between Whall, Gavin Jones and Mr Lewis - it was about money.

8m

It was about money they wanted from Wyn Lewis who apparently conned Mr Corrigan and Ms Bailey about of a large sum of money.

8m

Who knows what the issue was between them. You have to focus on the conclusion of who the killer is

6m

The killer had a crossbow. A man bought a caravan at Garddefa, the day before Whall claimed he sold a crossbow “by pure coincidence” the next day to another stranger asking to buy a van. He ends up buying Whall’s crossbow.

4m

If he sold the first crossbow in January why is he buying crossbow accessories after in February, March and April where he purchases bolts, before another crossbow is bought. Why did he purchase crossbow bolts and broadheads.

4m

We say Whall had access to a crossbow before he bought the Excalibur crossbow.

3m

The killer must have known the lay out of Gof Du. It required planning. How to get Mr Corrigan out of this house, what sort of angle he would have to shoot from and to align the telescopic sights. He must have “scoped out Gof Du” probably in the dark.

2m

Whall was there in the dark on April 17. He lied about that in interview to police. If it wasn’t for the Land Rover telematics sendoing it to Land Rover. Whall “would have got away with his lied and we would never have known he was at Gof Du.”

1m

When he was confronted with it he had to admit going there and said he went to the rocks to mediatate and to look for appropriate place to have a romantic encounter with Barry Williams. It’s clear he went there to look at Gof Du.

Steve Bagnall (@DPWrexNews) | Twitter

  • #237
Steve Bagnall

@DPWrexNews

·
5m

Whall said he went to Porthdafarch Beach. It’s clear he left because lights came on at Gof Du as Whall sat in his car in the driveway. Five seconds after the Land Rover is turned on and “he’s away”.

4m

He goes to Porthdafarch Beach still pursuing a place to meditate or a place for “mutual masturbation with Barry Williams” but it takes him back to Gof Du. “Scoping complete access to it.”

3m

Killer must have had a knowledge of crossbows - unusual choice with a broadhead. Whall has such a knowledge and interest looking at his Amazon purchases.

2m

The killer would have to know how to load and fire a crossbow. He would also have to know how to aim and fire and be proficient and have target practice. Mr Corrigan was hit with a single shot. “The killer knew what he was doing. Mr Whall was proficient with a crossbow.”

1m

Punch bag belonging to Whall showed clusters of crossbow bolt holes Mr Rouch says. “All central all aimed all separate groups” Whall knew who to fire it, aim it and hit his target.

11s

The killer would have had to have access to a 20 inch shaft with orange and white fletchings and red nock - the bolt that killed Mr Corrigan. On April 7 Whall placed an order for 24 of theses bolts - the same as the ones that killed Mr Corrigan - “Not one bolt left”

Steve Bagnall (@DPWrexNews) | Twitter

@DPWrexNews

·
9m

Would have needed access to green 125 broadheads. March he ordered via Amazon broadheads from China of similar kind.

9m

Amazon asked how many people bought or ordered a combination of the bolt and green broadhead - only two names came up Whalls and a Mr Cross in Essex - he had ordered 12 of the bolts and broadheads and hadn’t used any of them.

8m

Whall’s bolts could not be looked at because he had got rid of them. They were of exactly the same sought that killed Mr Corrigan 125 grade.

7m

At the time of the killing he had access to the same bolts and broadheads that killed Mr Corrigan - by he had got rid of th lot of them and his mobile phone.

6m

Killer would have had to be there between 12.08am and 12.28am on April 19. Whall initially lied to police but Land Rover telematics showed he was there at the time.

5m

Whall loaded up his boot on April 18 at Garddefa and checks what he has to take. Arrived at Porthdafarch Beach 11.10pm.

4m

On the way to Porthdafarch Beach he turns right towards Gof Du. The only reason was to have a final quick look before going to the beach and walking the coastal path.

3m

The boot opens and closes and he’s off to Gof Du and Whall is not back in his car until 12.42am after Mr Corrigan is murdered. One door is opened and closed as is the boot and he drives back to Garddefa.

2m

Whall was at Gof Du at the time and despite a bad knee had no difficulty going around Gof Du and going around the coastal path.

1m

At the time Mr Corrigan was shot Wahll was there. All eight things that apply to the killer - apply to Whall.

58s

By coincidence he claims he had a sexual encounter with Mr Williams at night - by coincidence at the same location when somebody was about to shoot Mr Corrigan.

Steve Bagnall (@DPWrexNews) | Twitter

  • #239
Steve Bagnall

@DPWrexNews

·
6m

Anglesey is not Manchester, Birmingham or London - according to him a corner at Gof Du was considered the ideal spot for this sexual encounter. “Mr Williams denies being with Whall that night and is supported by his mother and sister”.

5m

He was asked by Whall to provide an alibi and about other matters by solicitors there. He made a statement to his solicitor denying absolutely he was with Whall.

4m

We are left with 2 scenarios. 1. In the field outside Gof Du - there were 2 men strangers to each other who both knew about and had an interest in crossbows - access to bolts and green broadheads

2m

One is - that a man was there to kill Mr Corrigan and the other man was involved in a sexual encounter with another man. Or the other scenario is that Terence Whall shot and killed Gerald Corrigan.

16m

Trial resuming.

16m

Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and conspiracy to burn the Land Rover.

15m

Darren Jones - brother of Gavin Jones - and Martin Roberts have admitted arson of the Land Rover. How or why did they become interested in the Land Rover and going to Anglesey to take the vehicle.

13m

Coincidence? “Or it may be that they were put up to it - the question is by who?” Whall is a friend of Gavin Jones who is the brother of Darren Jones.

12m

By sheer coincidence Whall met Darren Jones just after the Land Rover was burned out for only the second time. The sole purpose of taking the Land Rover was to destroy it - not for enjoyment or to be sold on.

10m

After it was burned at 2.47pm Gavin Jones is calling his brother Darren with Whall standing beside and then a bit later they meet in Bangor - the arsonist, the owner and the intermediary.

10m

Gavin Jones is not suddenly going to ask his brother to destroy his Land Rover. The only answer is he arranged it because Whall had asked him to do it.

9m

We know why Whall wanted it destroyed because it was “the murder vehicle” and he didn’t want police interrogating it.

8m

Whoever destroyed the vehicle must have known there was a motive to destroy it. But Gavin Jones has not given evidence, so we don’t now his reason.

7m

Gavin Jones claims he did not know Whall had a crossbow - despite being round his house a lot and other people having seen it and had a go of it. “It just doesn’t stack up.”

6m

Hannah Salmon said Gavin Jones said he had crossbow and he showed it to her. “If she invented it - its a completely bizarre thing to invent. Or is it the truth.” And Jones has given no evidence to explain or dispute this.

5m

If he had a crossbow surely he would have discussed it with Whall his friend who also had one. He would have also realised Whall may be part of police inquiry into the crossbow murder of Mr Corrigan.

4m

For these reasons, Gavin Jones must be guilty of conspiracy to pervert course of justice says the prosecutor.

3m

“The complete and accurate picture of the person who died the bolt at Mr Corrigan was Terence Whall” who thn got rid of items including the Land Rover to frustrate the investigation.
