Warning to Parents - Snowman T-Shirts

I also liked the pretty feathers with the clip - although the clip was dissapointing - didn't seem made to hold in your hair very well...

I used to work in a jewelry store. We've got tons of those little ziplock baggies - all of our jewelry stock from the main store would arrive in them. One time a guy came in and asked if we could spare some - nice looking guy, obviously had some money. Well, as usual we had several overflowing bags of the little baggies, so my manager just asked how many he wanted. He said as many as you can spare, so she gave him a ton of them. He pulled out a money clip filled with money, asked how much to give for them, she said nothing, he dropped a 20 as he left anyway.

After he was gone, one of the other salespeople had to tell her (and me) that he was probably a drug dealer, and they use those little baggies to package their product! We had a bunch of fun that day joking around about how fun it would be if it had the jewelry store's name stamped on the baggies.

My 11 year old son has a friend who is, shall I say, a bit troubled.. no parental supervision, emotional and physical abuse at home.. but he IS a good boy, we have known him for 3 yrs. and I adore the child and feel so badly for him.. anyway, his mother is "sick" of him and is ready to "get rid of him" so I offered to take him, to give her a break (in reality, it's to give the poor kid a break).

It took some doing and I hate to even bring it up but we (my family) are white and they(this boys family) are black... the mother actually said to me, I'd rather he go to Juvenile detention then live with a white family!

OK!?!?!?!? This boy is 12! I can't throw a 12 yr. old child into a trash can. So I offered again and again "let me have him, I won't charge you anything, I'll feed him, buy his clothing. etc etc. just PLEASE don't throw him away.. he can still BE something!!

She finally gave in and sent him, his self-loathing and lack of self-esteem along with his clothes to my home... what do I find in his clothes?!?!
GANG related shirts... this snowman ya'll are talking about, he's got 2 of these shirts. He's got a Tupac shirt.. etc etc.

Needless to say, his first lesson in a "real family" was watching me toss these shirts into the trash. Then I brought him to his favorite store and he (with MY help) picked out shirts to replace the "gang" shirts.

Long story short--
He is PROUD to wear shirts with skateboarding logo's or what have you... more-so then the gang clothes.. so long as he is LOVED!

Thats a great thing you did! You have changed this kids life for the better, and not many people would have done so! I'm glad he found someone to love him before he ended up on the streets or worse.

It is a daily struggle with him, as he never learned many many things and sees himself as a "gangsta" but I firmly believe that with enough UNCONDITIONAL love, great things can happen for him...If you take the child out of the projects... you can then take the projects out of the child!
As we tell him everyday.. He can be anything he wants to be, no matter where it is he "came from".

I just have a hard time keeping my anger in check in regards to his mother and step-father. Ya know, the child is eligable for Medicaid but his mother never bothered to sign him up.. as a result he has 3 (adult) teeth that need to be pulled.
He is in the 7th grade and has a reading level of 4th grade... and it's NOT because he's stupid, it's because no one ever cared enough to find out if he was learning or not! :furious:

I am FAR from perfect and I will mess up in my own ways with him and my own child but I know that I will ALWAYS love and protect them both... with my life!

It just takes patience, he may not appreciate everything you are doing for him now, and he may want to fall back to his old ways of being a "gangsta" sometimes, but eventually he will see his life is better because of you and he will appreciate all of the oppurtunities you have given him to make something of hisself.
