They've had craploads of warning and craploads of time to react to those warnings. This isn't something that suddenly appeared overnight with no warning.

All of the top levels of management should be fired. There's no excuse for letting it reach this point.

I so agree congressionial nonsense-- and these idiots really think we are all stupid enough to right now, buy this nonsense that they are hoping to find nothing -- give me a break the cr@p that caught fire Monday was the new stuff!

Its gonna turn into a four year piece by piece on track section delay silly they should focus on what we elect them to do , no spend half their time lobbying to get somewhat in the oval office. If we took all the money all of them have spent on this -- we could fix our infrastructue, get our schools working, fix all the bridges that are about to collapse the power grid bla bla IMO they (congress) are a bunch of crooks - until there are term limits on these bozos forget it ......................................

It sounds to me like somebody is playing politics. I’m not sure what their goal is, but you don’t shut an entire subway down for 24 hours just for an inspection. That type of thing is normally done at night when the system is normally closed. In four nights they could inspect just as much as they could in one 24 hour period, with no disruption of service.

Pls dont forget with what 12 hours notice-- if it was so "dangerous" and urgent why was it ok last night to have 350,000 people ride home??

It does not affect these people. It once again effects the working class provate sector employers are not gonna pay their people for time missed. So all these people paychecks , who are struggling from the get go -- are going to be less.

That is why I started a thread - this is gonna turn into IMO another govt disaster . Go Congress ! I do not mean GO on vacation!!

All those other counries decades ago started to work on keeping there countries "moving" . Amtrack is derailing about 1 time per 10 days

Those of us wo have done accidents together know I love my NTSB!!

Well this is identical to what happened MOn - a year ago :

As a result of the smoke, 86 passengers were transported to local medical facilities for treatment. There was one passenger fatality.

A following train, stopped at the L’Enfant Plaza Station at about 3:25 p.m., and was also affected by the heavy smoke.

Passengers of both trains, as well as passengers on the station platforms, were exposed to the heavy smoke.

NTSB investigators have inspected the area of the incident, where they observed severe electrical arcing damage to the third rail and electrical cables about 1,100 feet ahead of train 302.

Recorded data shows that at about 3:06 p.m., an electrical breaker at one end of a section of third rail tripped (opened). At about 3:16 p.m. the WMATA Operations Control Center (OCC) began activating ventilation fans in an effort to exhaust smoke from the area.

Here is what NTSB told them to do- from the identical deal a 13 months ago :

ATE: Date: February 11, 2015

(Urgent)

This vulnerability needs to be immediately addressed by WMATA and the rail transit industry

National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the January incident, *implicitly criticized Metro last week for failing to ensure that all power-cable connections near its subway tracks are protected from contaminants.

Develop and implement detailed written tunnel ventilation procedures foroperations control center staff that take into account the probable source location of smoke and fire, the location of the train, the best evacuation route, and unique infrastructure features; these procedures should be based on the most effectivestrategy for fan direction and activation to limit passengers’ exposure to smoke.(Urgent)

.We are vitally interested in these recommendations because they are designed to prevent accidents and save lives. We would appreciate receiving a response from you within 30 days detailing the actions you have taken or intend to take to implement them.

NTSB Issues Recommendation to Address Electrical Short Circuiting Hazards on Washington’s Metro System

6/8/2015

Safety Board investigators found problems with certain electrical connections in Washington’s Metro system that require “immediate action.” The NTSB issued a safety recommendation today to address the situation.

Investigators found that some electrical connections associated with the power supply to the third rail were improperly constructed and installed, which can allow moisture and contaminants to enter the components. Such conditions can create the potential for electrical short circuiting, which could result in fire and smoke

The safety issue was further substantiated during the investigation of the February 11 smoke event in the tunnel near the Court House station. Investigators found that cable connectors were missing “sealing sleeves” designed to keep moisture and contaminants away from the high-voltage conductors.

able connector assemblies were missing the sleeves. The NTSB has learned that WMATA does not have a program to ensure that the sleeves, which are in its design specifications, are used and installed properly.

We are hopeful that WMATA management will act on this recommendation in a timely manner

Under these conditions, electrical arc tracking can thenoccur when contamination extends between the terminal lugs and ground, creating an electricallyconductive path along the outside surface of the cable. Over time, cumulative degradation of theinsulating material caused by this electrical arc tracking process can produce a low resistance

This is EXACTLY what happened this Monday, again, 13 months later

Here is atiny peice of how they work (NTSB) , its long, I just find them fascinating ! Since 13 years old ahhh!

If interested just start at 1:20 the first 1:20 are spent introducing all the parties involved (it is serious stuff !!)and can be more than tedious!! It isbasically a court hearing !

you are riding around in death traps!

Way to much typing.

gonna do what I am learning in an obserd fashion!

Chairman: How many apples are rotten throughout the system

98.5 % Sir

What did the agency do to address this finding

Sir we commisioned a study

What did the commission conclude

Sir, the rotten apples would ulimatly end in tradegy

What interventions did the agecy devolop to address this future disaster?

We came up with three options.

Describeed three options

Next question

What interventions were implemented.

None...............................................

Just to be sure I am understanding your response, sir, are you telling this body that rotten apples were discovered in 1983 and to date nothing has been done to remove and repair these rotten apples, throughout the medro?

Yes sir, I was not appointed until 3 years ago !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Late 1990' cost to fix rotten apples--- $525 million!

Any idea in todays costs?

Nope !

Thsi was 9 hours ago:

DC Metro inspections have found about 6 damaged cables or connectors in need of repair, says general manager; tests still under way

they will be looking at 600 jumper cables.

The Metro service area is largely coextensive with the inner ring of the Washington metropolitan area. Opened in 1976, the network now includes six lines, 91 stations, and 117 miles (188 km) of route.
Metro is the second-busiest rapid transit system in the United States in number of passenger trips, after the New York City Subway. There were 215.3 million trips, or 712,843 trips per weekday, on Metro in fiscal year 2015. In June 2008, Metro set a monthly ridership record with 19,729,641 trips, or 798,456 per weekday. Fares vary based on the distance traveled, the time of day, and the type of card used by the passenger. Riders enter and exit the system using a stored-value card in the form of a paper magnetic stripe farecard or a proximity card called SmarTrip.

Edit time out i driving me nuts sorry !

Even Developing World Cities Don't Shut Down Their Subway For A Day

Makes no sense at all! None! Had to be shut down - today they say then today this: safety problems were discovered.-- then -22 words later (!) will resume rail service at 5 a.m

So if I am following this , dangeroues enough to shut, now actually find stuff, know its there, and reopen - this just so typical of beurocrats

So, exactly what was the purpose? We knew Monday that problems exist - it caught fire again. WTH??

"It's the capital of the United States and one of the biggest business centers in the country. This is like a developing country."

It's in a category all by itself.

"You would* be amazed at how clean and fantastic the subway systems in China are," Dasgupta says. "The one in Delhi is cleaner, brighter. But we have to remember these are relatively new systems. New York has been running its system for 100 years. It doesn't look pretty, it's dark, it's rat-infested — but it works."

ALL ABOARD!!

750 volts

There were 216 total smoke and fire incidents on Metrorail in 2015, more than double the total for 2014.

Or, 216 "hints"!

if they were not able to complete all the repairs by his 5 a.m. deadline, trains would single-track around problem areas or shuttle bus service would be offered between Metro stations.

Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that it plans to launch a safety inspection blitz of the Metro rail system, beginning next week, to review red-light running by train operators, imperfections in tracks and misuse of hand brakes.

Federal safety officials investigating the L’Enfant Plaza incident warned that some power-cable connector assemblies are poorly constructed, lacking the proper kind of sealing sleeves.

Translation (!) The nations capatial is gonna be a mess !

Thanks for posting all of this info! I watched a lot of the hearing. Fascinating.

How about the part where they said the tunnel for the train that goes to the Pentagon was in extremely poor condition! Hah! Betcha when they heard this those Pentagon guys said "Get the Department of Transportation involved immediately!"

As for the shut down, Washington DC has historically been subject to some extremely heavy snowfalls, resulting in the entire city being "shut down" for several days. Everything will survive.

I amglad you watched Always! Aviation is reaaly awesome! I did not know this ;

Monday's fire was "disturbingly similar," Wiedefeld said in a statement. No one was hurt because it occurred before the system was open

-- which intially made me think they were overeacting and should have done it on Sunday. ABC

They fixed about 3/4 of em and opened up with 6 of em still ready to burn the place down! Can you imagine private sector doing , 18 of our 24 elevators wont fall to ground, all 24 are returning to service!!

San Francisco Bay Area last night and today:

Mystery glitch’s return knocks out BART cars, snarls commute
By Matier & Ross Updated 9:41 pm, Wednesday, March 16, 2016

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Mystery-glitch-s-return-knocks-out-BART-cars-6894837.php

“For the second time in a month, a mysterious power surge knocked out numerous BART cars Wednesday — puzzling agency officials who thought they had the problem under control the first time around, and making life miserable for commuters packed into shortened trains.

BART was able to repair some of the 25 or so cars that lost their propulsion systems on the Pittsburg-Bay Point line, but not all of them — raising the likelihood that many trains will be short of cars for the Thursday morning commute.

BART engineers worked into the night trying to find an answer for what is becoming a major problem for the aging rail system.

When the first round of problems began in late February, BART focused on a new electrical substation that had been installed a few months earlier near the Oakland end of the Transbay Tube. Wednesday’s problems, however, happened far from there — between the North Concord and Bay Point stations.

“It’s the same symptoms,” said BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost. “But we don’t know if it’s the same cause.””

Wondering if Washington and San Francisco have the same problem?
