Thanks for this info SK'. I hope it is ok to abbv your user name SK?

I just thought of something.... It would be a long shot and probably take a lot of time, but I wonder if by chance our GB shared his fathers name if maybe we found SS info for someone who might be listed on one of the older census with a son born the right time as our GB?

I'm not even sure if the math would work... if GB's father may have worked long enough to need to apply for an SS# but it might be worth trying to look for someone who has time.

Just thought I'd toss it out there.

Remember this?

I am guessing this has been discussed before, but Benedo is a Russian boys name...curious. In our searching, did we find any Russian derivatives of Brody?

Hi Sidekick,

See my post #466 in this threat. There is a link which has Russian names that derived from the name Brody (not the other way around). Brody was a town that originated in Russia and was taken over (IIRC correctly) by Austria in 1772. The town of Brody is where the surname Brody originated from in Russia.

I hope this helps.

Hi Cubby, sure call me anything you like!

As far as GB's father, I too had thought about that while searching as there are so many of them. Hard to believe this guy is so much a mystery isn't it? Afterall, people find people all the time on Ancestry etc.. Are we seeking Raf's suggestion that Brody is Russian? I am still open to looking at them all in the time frame. Wonder if he had siblings? Who was his mama? So many questions. I'll keep a look out.

Where is Minnestota? Is it far from California?

Was it August 15th Brody liked to say his BDAY was? Thx!!

Going back to my above question, no one would know when our BD died ... right? How would they without the SS #? On the lists in the above link they all state when the were born / they had a SS and when they died. :(
Help?
I am going with 1860 ish for the father of Brody... something around age 35 but then again he could have fathered G much earlier!

BRODY, George Samuel married in 1948 in Kanawha a bride named Rosaline Howard.
( I doubt this is him, but lack of death date is important.. and we don't know for sure he didn't marry even if for a short time..... ?)

* Does not state date of death... Kanawha has several locations, see link.
1. California
2. Iowa
3. A river.... nah
4. West Virginia

There are alot of Brody's who came from California who had SS#'s. His father, mother, or siblings could be one of them. How to find out? Uhmmm.... that would require heaps of work trying to locate their obits I presume. I wonder if his parents were still alive when he passed away? My father... passed at age 100 1/2 so it is possible!

What info is on the SS file?

Is there anyone here who has an ancestry account to check 6 George Brody's given the address 483 9th St. Oakland. Ancestry advises to check city directories first. This is what I did and there are a few I need checked.

thanks! SK

Hi Sidekick,

I have Ancestry. I have checked GB's extensively (and there are a lot) and so has Raf and we have both posted what we have found. We now know from the 1940 census that his birth year was 1905/1906 and there is very little info on GB's born around that time.

Let me know what you want checked and I will have another look.

You're so cute, SK. :) Minnesota is just below Manitoba- in fact their borders touch. (which for some odd reason, I would love to visit someday, since I have already visited Burnaby/VC/BC.)

Yes, iirc, the dob GB used was August 15th.

I'm confident about the census info that raf found on GJB. I'm almost certain that is our GB, cities match up, addresses match up. raf is like a brain surgeon with the genealogy stuff, she rocks!

I'm hoping it was perhaps his father that anglicized their name. If it was changed. It sucks that I no longer have access to ancestry, though I can read the free stuff. There are times I get in the mood to just search for hours. I don't find it mind numbing at all, and I actually get into it, where time flies..... We just need to see if we can find a son of a brody in an earlier census I think.... and then research that way. I hope that is making sense.

FWIW, if the August dob is correct, the year would be 1905 since in April of 1940 he would not have reached his birthday that year.

though some with estimates may show as 1906.

I noticed that too. It made me wonder about what Annasmom said about GB saying he had wealthy? relatives back east. Was that bs from GB, or would that eliminate the possibility of those CA relatives being from GB's side? Or would it mean some of his relatives left CA for the east coast? (Yes, I still ask questions like a little kid. :) )

I have another dumb question. If people emmigrated from Russia, why would they enter the US on the east coast? Was there any place along the west coast people entered the US? I'm interested in history now, but afraid I was a poor student while in school. How I wish I could have had the interest then, that I have now.

another thought regarding GB only having an elementary or 8th grade education. It was not uncommon back then. In fact, one of the paper companies I once worked for, the CEO, had only an 8th grade education. He started in sales and eventually purchased the company.

We know GB knew how to read. It's possible he came from a family which he had to work to help support after the 8th grade, but read a lot and was self taught on subjects he found of interest.

just thought I'd toss that out there...

Morning or Afternoon OzzieMum!

The list on the link are Brody's which I put one of his address's in search and also his title of Jr. Research Assis Dem.... (wonder what the Dem stand for?) Demographics? Was he a city clerk? So, targeting these stats I was hoping our Brody may appear as you'll see there are 5 or 6 on the top list.... other Brody's not so certain underneath.

Thanks and I appreciate if you could just take a peek. :-)

Love ya!
SK.
