I like to check NAMUS once in a while for my area to see if anything new has been posted.
Today, I saw that Winnebago County is showing 13 unidentified persons cases, and a lot of them look like they were added in 2026.
I’ve lived here my whole life and haven’t heard anything about multiple sets of remains being found, especially not several showing up around the same time like this. That’s the part that really seems strange. Even one case like that usually gets talked about.

I asked a couple people I know if they had heard anything and they hadn’t either. One thought maybe they could be Native American remains found during digging, but that doesn’t really add up. Early February in Wisconsin the ground is usually frozen solid, so it’s not like there would be a bunch of digging going on then.

What’s throwing me off is that those February dates are listed as the dates the remains were discovered. That’s why this doesn’t quite make sense to me.
Just trying to figure out what I’m actually looking at here. Are these actually new discoveries, or something else going on? Can anyone shed some light on this or if it might just be an error?

I remember seeing something about several unknown remains being found at a funeral home. I don’t remember if it was an illegal operation or maybe not licensed. Let me see if I can figure out what I read and where. It doesn’t seem like it was too long ago, maybe within the last 6 months or so.

Of course I am unable to locate it now but will continue to search for it in case it’s relevant.

You could call or email the ME office there and place an inquiry. They maybe able to shed some light on the cluster of postings added all around the same time.

In NamUs under Contacts, each one has a case #. For example UP156406 shows date body found as Jan. 1, 2026 but the case # is F2025.10 which would seem that the UID was actually found in 2025.

The fact that the circumstances of discovery say "unknown location" suggests to me that these remains were in storage somewhere and not properly labeled. I think the ME's Office, Sheriff's Office, local PD, maybe a college could be a few other possibilities? IIRC I've seen at least one case of human remains found among the belongings of deceased professor that had a similar description. I hope they edit the cases in the future to provide more information about them.🤞
