oH i forgot to post on the school issued Ipads: they have an app that parents can set as to how long you can use it, and what sites you can visit and if the parents or school didn't set it up then houston we have a problem. I'm so FOR the net; esp for lessons and learning....but only if the correct filters are in place. The filters are there....parents need to be using them. If they are not tech lit then they need to have someone help them become tech lit or set the settings for them. I dont think this all begins in the home...I don't believe in Evil, as it is a religious ideal actually. But I do however believe in humans, and we all have the ability to kill. Every single one of us. And we've been doing so since our inception. Sad isn't it?

Other countries sell,plenty of arms. I have a friend from Israel. She said it is incredibly safe there for her as a single woman.

Other countries have access to video games and violent films. The ones I have seen in some Asian language ( not sure, but it was on in a home where young children were watching it), are far more violent than ones in English.

Other countries have children that are more unsupervised than here. Children in France have far more freedom to play and be on their own.

It's funny you should mention that. The link I provided earlier, the study that America has more gun violence than 27 other developing Nations, also mentioned that America LEADS in international arms sales. Its stated in the study.

Also, I should reiterate again, that never did I make the claim that other countries are not violent. That would be ridiculous. What I am talking about here is the United States, And you are right, there is something very wrong with the amount of violence we are experiencing. It's truly disturbing.

What is wrong is our laws, they have not been rewritten to address society today. From assault weapons to plain assault...our laws must be amended. Period. What is wrong, is the question. I just got this add about checking on sex offenders in my area so I do the check and there are 274; and many are sent here from surrounding states. It is sickening. So; we are diligent. If I find one lives on our road, a sign will go up. If it's taken down another one will go up closer to their home. That's how I roll. Until we rewrite our laws, and outlaw all assault weapons, we will only go downhill from here. Esp now that so many have shown even up to this week in Seattle that walking into a school with a weapon and opening fire, will and can be done if they are so inclined to make that happen. No way to stop them....not if they are determined. Sadly. Edited to add; college was a "religious" college....to boot. Religion sadly solves nothing imo. I do not know what this guys beef was...and with cops too eager to kill in some situs we will never know. Society today is crumbling. I'm still waiting for flight 370 to show up again...and I do believe it will. In America.

It is alarmingly recent history as far as improvements in domestic violence here in the US. Not all that long ago in some places it was very glossed over. Not to mention spousal rape was legal in many places until very recently.

And laws or not but there are still jurisdictions where these crimes are not taken seriously.

Regarding supervision - I feel like it's hovering to excess to never let a ten or twelve year old go somewhere unsupervised. I sometimes wonder if we are raising a nation of neurotics with the way kids are overly supervised these days. Ten and twelve are old enough to walk around the neighborhood, walk to a store, spend time at the library a movie, etc.

I'm not talking about supervision of victims, I'm talking about supervision of the perps. Victims have been walking to the store, at the movies and at school.

Adam Lanza, Elliot Rodger and now these girls were all exposed to excessive violence online.

Truth be told, a kid with bad parenting can be a saint and a kid with excellent parenting can be trouble.

Like the article says, what is one supposed to do, call the police and say, I think my child may murder someone? You are supposed to be able to predict that?

So you monitor them. And they still kill someone. What then? oh that's right, some person on the internet says it is your fault even though you killed yourself being a parent. Or you don't monitor them. You beat them and abuse them and they become a doctor... can you take credit for that? No. Sometimes your kids will just be who they are no matter how hard we try to not make them that way.

I realize you're talking about supervision of the perps, but a few days ago, they were not perps. They were just a couple of twelve year olds. Everyone claiming that they should have been supervised more (despite the fact that we don't even know how much/little supervision they had yet), how mug supervision should there have been? We can't hover over our kids 24/7.

We were going to have a released sex offender in our community. It was very strange as he was going to a wealthy area with no transportation. Turned out to be a fake address. No one had checked a d did not know where he actually was so the community notification meeting was cancelled. That is for Level 3, the most likely to reoffend. You will not know about the others

There was a strong warning on the letter about the meeting.Harassment and I forget what else would not be tolerated because these community notification laws are at risk of being repealed.

These notifications are for perps who rape adults as well. I feel it is good to know who some of your neighbors may be

And yeah, knowing that this is all connected to a few sites that promote trolling, I do have to wonder if they've been 'encouraged' in some way by sociopathic trolls.

What makes me wonder this is the way AW spoke about it.Like she was reciting something maybe? Might be just reading into it, but it seemed a bit off to me in that regard.

It's bad, I mean in real life would anyone be happy to let their 12 year old daughter hang out with a bunch of college kids (and god knows who else) from 4 Chan (or similar forum) every night? I very much doubt it, but that's the potential here. I'm sure a couple of kids who thought they had 'the obsession', believed in Slenderman to the hilt, were arguing with skeptics who thought he wasn't real online, and who wanted to be Proxies would be great fun for online trolls to play with .. chilling thought no? :scared:

That's true but I was not replying as to whether these two kids have been bombarded. I keep seeing posts suggesting scary stories didn't harm them. But there is a difference between scary stories and what is available at a glance, quickly and easily, on the internet.

We know these kids had access. We know they posted about the fictional character that encourages people to murder. This was more than stories written for children or a scary movie here and there. Is it the cause? I doubt it can be on its own. But I do have an issue with young people being able to access so much violent content. It is a precarious time in their lives and a time when mental illness often surfaces. Such content can greatly affect fragile minds.

The police can have you put on a 72 hour psych hold if they deem that you are a danger to yourselves or others. They should be better trained to recognize this, especially if a parent called and is concerned. Not all people are screaming and ranting before going on a murderous rampage. Quite the opposite.

I won't for fear of kidnapping. Ilene Mischeloff disappeared from my neighborhood. Don't care if that makes me a helicopter parent, I know where my child is. There are plenty of other ways to be independent.

If you have a link, I'll defer. But I think that's kind of a gray issue. When school police have wanted to talk to my child, they've acted like they could without my consent. But when push came to shove, they did not. I tell my kids to never, ever, ever speak to the police when they come to you without calling me first and tell them you won't talk to them without your parent being present. I wonder if state law varies. I wouldn't think so since it appears to be a constitutional issue, but idk for sure.

Police can talk to your child about abuse or sex abuse without your permission.

I wonder if the 23 parents of Sandy Hook feel their surviving children are safe at school if they have any surviving children? Or the people mowed down in the movie theater, or in the halls of Columbine High, or Virginia Tech, or the University of Santa Barbara, or that school where the kid ran around stabbing everyone recently,or the mall in Nebraska or Seattle Pacific University shooting, which occurred less than 24 hours ago. Or.........(insert the next one here).

We may not be Beirut but we have our own kind of war going on in America and I feel that the longer that we deny that we are a violent culture, socializing our children to glorify violence and therby normalizing it, we will continue to see this violence and more. We are our own worst enemy that way.

We point the finger at everyone else while our house is a mess.
