WI - 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapses!

This bridge had a single arch over the river, with supports on either side of the river---I don't know if the supports are even in the river?? It was built that way so as not to prevent any sizeable river traffic.

Oh I see Buzz.. thank you.
I wonder if the bridge has ever been hit by a ship? That would compromise it's integrity.

FYI

Are California's 24,000 Bridges Safe?

CBS13) SACRAMENTO California has 24,000 bridges and about 11% of them are deemed unsafe by the Surface Transportation Policy Project.

CBS13's Naj Alikhan looked into who is responsible for checking and maintaining the state's bridges.

Cal Trans spokesperson Cassandra Pitts says her agency is responsible for half of those bridges, state and local governments take care of the rest. Pitts says bridges in this state are inspected every 2 years

Comments, please??

--->>>Wellll, I heard someone on cable news ranting a bit, that before the Iraq war WE could not and did not have the money for it, HE suggested we find the person who found the money so that person could find the money for fixin' our bridges. Hmmm, for that.

A brilliant post as usual, I was skimming since page four since it sounded like Congress had taken over this thread.

It certainly appears that the people who INVESTIGATE such matters as the 'BRIDGE DOWN', don't know HOW or WHY it happened, SO I am waiting for the official explanation. I am coloring this disaster as very ODD. NOW IF IF IF in the next few days WE have more bridges go down in America, I think WE may have to review our notes.

A QUICK AND IMMEDIATE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AS I SEE IT - IS TO METER the Traffic across the bridge, so that there is not mega loads of cars all sitting in a HUNKLEBUMP together all wanting to get someplace at the same idential time. Lesson the loads quick.

It does appear that WE may need to invent cars that travel on water and land for those folks who must travel over water to work, hmmm. Maybe they could have sails on them, for the windier days, save fuel.

Leave your car on your home side take a personal boat over then a bus to work. Think of the gas we would save. All the people who love jogging, get a rickshaw and jog people around to wherever. The joggers could make some money and get their exercise.

They have a ferry or two in the Boston area, my daughter rides those. A ferry scares me too.

Yes Uncle Buzz tell us more about the BLACK BUDGETED MONEY I am quite igorant about where this money comes from and whur it goes, (yes I know there is supposed to be another n and o in that word). Do it in small sentences for those of who donut er caint read long sentinces, AND understand um.

Well we no longer have to worry about the overpass that collapsed the other day, just North of Sacramento, it totaled a FedEx truck--the driver thought he had bought the farm. We'll have to find the list of the other 2639 unsafe CA bridges.

Eve and cheko, glad your loved ones are safe.

what about water eroding away the bridge at the bottom? Is that a possibility?

It's the limestone in the soil where the bridge connects that probably eroded away. Caused the load balance to shift if it eroded unevenly. Traffic on one side of the bridge could've been caused the bridge to snap.

The bridge was designed with single points of failure, rather than the highly preferred redundancy in safety. Only two lanes were open in each direction, so it wasn't overloaded; however this could have caused an imbalanced load, depending on the structure, and which lanes were open. Whether the construction/resurfacing is involved is dependent on how much of the roadbed they were removing at given points. I've heard conflicting reports as to whether construction was still going on at 6:00PM--there are always harmonics that could be involved. and the train was passing by underneath the bridge at the time.

--->>>Now thats a new and fresh idea Buzz, 'harmonics' , did I see TWO trains under that bridge, the silver one on the right had part of the bridge smashing it a bit, but the darker train on the left, I did not see any damage. Did not have a good sight angle to observe it though.

The mixed up green metal supports were so tangled and looked to me to be inadequate to support that much weight, but then again I do not design bridges. BUT the noise and rumble of the trains could have gotten something going on with some key structures of the metal puzzlework, and being so SOOOOOOOO close to the water.

Thank you CK.

I can't talk about the Black Programs Camper, and nobody can ask any questions about them, even how much they cost. They are paid for out of a hidden pocket. There's an awful lot that we don't know about. Actually I think halliburtons programs in Iraq fall under that category, because they are allegedly immune to any investigations of costs and profits.

The Feds are reporting that investigation of all bridges is taking place allover the US today. Stated from CNN news.

Although, it appears that the bridge collaspe was due to poor or damaged infrastructure?? I find it intersting that the Feds are checking all bridges anyhow? Are they paranoid, or do they know something we don't?

I think they just have to.

I've watched that video over and over and it's seems to start on the side where the train is. I wish I could find a way to download it, so I can clean it up and look at it frame by frame.

 Heyy, I realize that...however, it never ceases to amaze me that they are always so quick to say in most disaster situations, that it isn't "terror" related. But, then all the investigation that follows, seems to be. Maybe they have to cancel out all possibilities, makes sense.

There are older bridges in the US, I live near San Francisco, and I was in the 89 earthquake with the Bay Bridge. That bridge was a double decker, so many were crushed underneath. It was awful.

The Golden Gate bridge is 70 years old, and is in "continuous" repair. It appears often than not, it boils down to money and spending appropriately the state funds, to repair the roads and bridges in MN.

Yes, they probably know we have 80,000+ bridges just waiting to fall into rivers across the country.

That's what I thought I saw too. That is the area where the heavy construction equipment was, and it appeared to be very near where they were working at the time.

With 70,000 - 80,000 bridges across the US in need of repair, terrorists could just wait around until we do outselves in, which may happen unless a there is a movement to permanently monitor and improve the infrastructure of this country. It should be a campaign issue.

Right now I think Minnesotans are showing compassion, but once the dust has settled, I think anger will replace the compassion. Senator Amy Klobuchar got it right when she said, "A bridge in America just shouldn't fall down."

Nor should steam rise from pipes under our streets in NYC killing people! Like I said before, they celebrate our self-inflicted events.

--->>>WElllllll, I knew that Buzz, I knew that no one on the OUTSIDE knows where the money mysteriously comes from, those captured pilots of the UFO's can't eat that much can they? BIG grocery bills er, hmmm.I did hear the same fellow I quoted earlier, whose name I donut remember, say that WE have just over 700 bridges of the SAME design as the Minneapolis one is - in our America.

Buzz will you look those up please? Lucky I live in the 'flatland' part of Colorado, however it is raining right this minute.

I wonder which one was the last or most recent one built of that design, reason for asking some of the builders MIGHT still be alive to offer their expertise on this disaster.

.

They just reported not to worry too much about the bridges; they score higher (C) than most of our other infrastructure, dams, water purifcation, roads, and pipelines. etc.. Gives you that warm feeling, doesn't it. be careful that psychosis doesn't set in. and they wonder why the U.S. consumes 65% of the world's legal drugs.

Guess where the fasteners for the bridge are manufactured?

One of the civil engineers said, that's what happens when the states build on the cheap. He said the design of the bridge was unforgiving, meaning that if a member failed, there wasn't any redundancy to pick up the load.
