Missing Children: Aiden Grefe & Dakota Brown

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance with locating Aiden Grefe, 17, of Merrill, WI and Dakota Brown,16, of Merrill, WI.

Aiden and Dakota were last seen together near State Rd 17/ Shingle Mill Rd in the Town of Harrison, Lincoln County, WI. It is believed Aiden and Dakota walked away from this area or were picked up by an unknown person at approximately 9AM on 04/16/2023.

Their whereabouts are currently unknown and this has been reported to be uncommon behavior on their part. Dakota was last seen wearing a pink top and Aiden was last seen wearing a sleeveless white shirt and jeans or sweatpants.

If you see Aiden or Dakota, please call 911. All other tips can be reported to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 715-536-6272. We are also asking friends and family of both individuals to refrain from logging into the missing persons accounts as this may affect the efforts of law enforcement to locate them.

Due to the lack of reliable information into these teen’s whereabouts, this does not qualify for an AMBER alert at this time.

Re: MISSING TEENAGERS

We appreciate everyone’s thoughts, prayers, willingness to help, etc…

However…

PLEASE…stay away from this area FOR RIGHT NOW.

There is a coordinated and organized effort between our office and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with numerous other agencies that has been mobilized. The MAJOR…and we can’t stress this enough…the MAJOR problem we are currently encountering is groups of people freelancing on search efforts. Currently there are several of their vehicles stuck on the roads and trails that our equipment now cannot access.

Additionally, we have air resources that are coordinating a search effort. If there are unknown people, and especially unknown numbers of them, that are out walking through the woods and doing their own searches, those air resources cannot differentiate between which FLIR images are of interest, or which ones are out searching. At that point, we then have to redistribute our resources to clear every one of those potential targets.

We also respectfully request that everyone please, please save your Facebook comments for if you have actionable information. It is extremely difficult for us to weed through other comments and questions in search of ones that might need immediate attention.

Lastly, at the point where a ground search is our most useful tool, and in the event we need more people, we will put out a request for volunteers at that time.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Confirmation :(

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the two bodies found Monday in a forest near Enterprise are Merrill teenagers Aiden Grefe and Dakota Brown.

The discovery comes as local law enforcement agencies were searching for Grefe, 17, and Brown, 16. The two teenagers were reported as being last seen together around 9 a.m. Sunday morning near State 17 and Shingle Mill Road.

Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Terri Hook said at a Tuesday news conference that exposure played a factor in their deaths as the teens were not properly dressed for the weather. The Oneida County Medical Examiner will conduct the autopsies.

No other information was immediately available.

Enterprise is a town on Pelican Lake about 30 miles east of Tomahawk and 50 miles northeast of Wausau. It is also about 15 miles east of where Grefe and Brown were last seen.

Certainly by 16 and 17 kids know that there are serious consequences from being underdressed in the elements-especially in northern WI. There has to be more to this. Why were they out there in the first place?

You can't tell the teenage kids to dress appropriately, most of them think they know it all. Had 80 & 90 degree weather last week. The temps dropped & a snow storm came in & some places got 6 inches of snow.

So heartbreaking!!!!

Dec 19, 2023 update - this article is, imo, very well written. It is lengthy, with lots of details of how searchers tracked their phones, how weather conditions changed, how the two potentially trekked over six square miles in a portion of a 20,000-acre forest, how GPS data is typically more accurate than cell ping data, how drones may be helpful, and how dedicated each of these different agencies and individuals are to finding missing people, even in quite dangerous conditions even to themselves. It appears to me that other folks, like myself, who know very little about being lost and what to do and not do if that were to happen.

On Tuesday, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference announcing that the bodies of Brown and Grefe had been found in the Enterprise block of the Oneida County Forest. Cpt. Terri Hook said they would not be providing a lot of details about where or how they were found. She noted weather and their attire likely played a factor in their deaths; autopsies would be done to determine a cause of death. She said Lincoln and Oneida counties’ sheriff’s offices, district attorneys, and coroner/medical examiner would be jointly investigating the deaths.
