WI - Armed Student Reportedly Holding High School Classroom Full of Hostages

Police received a call from a school administrator after 3 p.m. local time Monday, reporting that the student burst into the classroom and took hostages.

Choral teacher Bonita Weydt said she was talking with a teacher in another classroom after school, which lets out about 3:10 p.m., when principal Corry Lambie came in.

"I said, 'Corry, what's going on?' and he said, `Get out of the building,"' Weydt said.

Wow!! Been running around with Mom and Brandon for past couple hours! Hostage situation at Marinette High School and then some dumb took advantage of that and decided to rob The Store gas station while everyone was at the scene of the School! There are blocks of people and streets lined with cars all around here.

The hostage situation at Marinette High School is on-going. A male student is holding a classroom of approximately 18 students and one female teacher.

The suspect is armed with a handgun of unknown make and model. Police are in phone contact with the teacher in the classroom. The suspect has not made his motive known nor has he made any demands.

By about 7 p.m., about 40 law enforcement personnel had converged on the scene, according to Skorik, with more coming throughout the night.

They included hostage negotiators who set up inside the school, according to Skorik. They had not talked directly with the student some three hours into the incident, but did get regular updates from the teacher.

Skorik said that the hostage-taker is a student at Marinette High, and that he believed -- though he could not confirm -- was assigned to the class that he took over.

Police know the identity of the student, though they haven't name him publicly, and have talked with his family members. Skorik said law enforcement believe the the young male, armed with a single handgun, is acting alone.

My thoughts and prayers are with those up north tonight. When I think of "Marinette", I think of peaceful family summer vacations, not this sort of thing. I hope for a safe resolution for all.
